I was wandering around tonight with multiple Firefox windows open when I stumbled upon something very nice.

Lyngsat shows that the Music Choice audio channels (which the evil-doers at DirecTV dropped in favor of XM - yuck!) are available on Galaxy 25 for free.

So if I've got this right...
Purchase FTA dish with LNBF and FTA receiver
Install and aim dish
Follow instructions on FTA receiver
Free programming

The instructions I downloaded were for an S-1 FTA-Classic Choice Set. It seems no more difficult that installing a DiSH 500. Is this all you have to do to enjoy FTA from a single location in space?

EDIT: Having found some other things that are listed as being free on the same satellite, well, this seems too good to be true. Before I plunk $200, I just want to make sure I'm not missing one tidy little piece of the puzzle...

You've got it! G-25 is a great satellite for a fixed dish. FTA is a bit more of a challenge to aim then a dish 500 -- but not much. I recommend a 90cm dish as a minimum size.

If you are looking for music I'd also add in a Diseqc switch and a 18inch dish with legacy DishNet or Direct LNB on it for the music at 119. Unless of course you already get this music there.

Before you know it you'll be buying a motor to catch the rest of the sky.

Which receiver are you planning on getting?

I'd highly recommend starting out with the 90cm dish. It's well worth the little extra price.

please note they could be scrambled at any time. It does happen

- There appears to be a lot of good stuff on Galaxy 25. I'm not sure I liked the new age channel that much, but with other possibilities, it seems worth the investment to 'play'

- 90cm. I'll go along with that suggestion. Couldn't hurt!

- We have both D* and E*, but if there's other music to be had on 119, do tell.

I'm a new age junkie. Music Choice has the better channel of all participants. So far as I'm concerned.

yes, please do note that they could scramble at any time they please... like Bev did with a ton of their radio in the not too distant past.

I really don't know why Bell would spend the money to scramble the audio channels. Maybe they had heard that Iceberg was listening to Power97. :)

I have found the audio quality on those Music Choice channels to be "OK", nothing fantastic.
