I want/need to replace my old duo625, I also have a duo722. We have 2 old 36 inch tube tv's that will not be replaced until they die or we move, so says the husband! That could be awhile, they still work great. They are what the duo receivers are hooked up to, with the small 27 inch HDTV's as tv2's. I was looking into the Hopper and realized to have 4 tv's working I need them to be all HDTV's, is that correct? So, does that mean my only option is to replace the 625 with another 722?

If it matters we have been with dish a very long time, current contract was satisfied a long time ago and I am paying for the protection plan as of right now, and have HD120 free given out a gift from some promotion back a few years.

Thanks for any suggestions, would like to get this accomplished this week.

Suggestion.

Place a potted plant on top of the old TV's... then leave there for a few weeks. Now go an overwater the plants so that the water leaks and drips into the offending TV's.

Now go get some real TV's and enjoy. :)

To answer your question NO all your TV's do not need to be HD to use the Hopper and Joey. :)

Hopper and Joey have SD outputs, so you could use them. 1H/3J or 2H/2J would run about $11 more monthly than two VIP722s.

Unless sharing a single DVR is a deep desire, I'd probably stick with the 722 until you replace the TVs. Hopper is a great solution, but it is really designed for HD and doesn't scale down well. The font size and contrast of the UI is really geared toward larger HD screens. The interface would be functional on the 36" units depending on viewing distance, but would be relatively soft and fuzzy. Even though the smaller 27" TVs are HD, their size would work against them, again depending on view distance. It will all work, just not sure you would be happy. I have a couple of SD sets fed off a Joey - watching TV is fine but using the guide is frustrating at times.

Supposedly a larger font interface is in the works for Hopper, but I wouldn't make a purchase hoping they get it done.

You have one Hopper unit, that is the main unit, when you record stuff it is stored on the Hopper.

Each additional TV (no matter if its HD or SD) gets whats called a Joey Unit. the Joey unit talks to the main Hopper unit and gets their programming from there. You can watch Live TV or recroded shows from the Hopper in any room in your house where you have a Joey hooked to the tv. :)

Its that simple.

I am surprised that you're feeding the SD signal to your HDTVs and the HD signal to your SDTVs.

And another reason to consider dumping the CRTs sooner rather than later. Some areas are charging as much as $50 disposal fees. That will only go up and spread. And if they find one in your trash, and the trash collectors are "supposed to look," you would be in for being fined. And not just in CA. Google it.

Be aware the HOPPER only has 3 tuners so if you have 1 Hopper and 3 Joeys the four TVs can't have independant channel selection like your 722/625 system can currently provide. One will have to watch the same programming as on another joey.

If you can take the extra $$ cost, I would recommend going with a 2H and 2J setup. The monthly fees will be the same and it could potentially cut down on recording/viewing conflicts.

Isn't that 2nd Hopper $200?

I think that's the cost for a second Hopper for new users (with the first one and Joeys being free). For existing subs, first Hooper and up to three Joeys are $100 and second one is another $100. Since OP is an existing sub, it'll be a $100 decision.

Or, just use a sledgehammer and a shovel - a shovel to dig the hole, the sledgehammer to bust up the TV into small pieces to throw into hole. :D

Or leave them in front ofa neighbor's house when you get up early to read his newspaper.

Mine has composite, component and IIRC S video. Over the years it's gotten heavier and I certainly can't lift it with my wife anymore. And PIP, which we never used.

Just about to place the call to swap out my old dual dvr for a 722 and saw they were giving 922 now. Should I go with the 922 over the 722. I have had no problems with my current 722 but would like to get what is best.
