Can standard linear LNBF, such as ESX521 be used to receive HD channels? Or would I need to get one that's specifically advertised as 'HD-ready' ?

There is no such thing as a HD ready LNB

The LNB picks up a batch of frequencies. As long as the signal is DVB the LNB doesnt care what kind it is. Now depending on the receiver, you might be able ot see the channel or not.
LNB will pick up SD channels, HD channels, 4:2:2 channels, DVB-S2 channels

Thank you Iceberg. Do you know why they sell a separate line for HD, called DMX521? The design looks very different from ESX521, which is not advertised as 'HD-ready'?

marketing hype....thats all it is

Like when the digital TV conversion was happening and all of a sudden TV antennas said "HD ready" yet my 12 year old antenna still trucks along just fine picking up channels perfectly.
Both the DMX and the ESX models are from the same company (Galaxy-Marketing). The ESX is just a newer model.

I have 2 LNB's on my 2 dishes. One is a ESX522 that works great. The other is an old Sadoun LNB that has been on the dish for 3-4 years now and works just fine. Picks up all the channels that are out there. Doesnt matter if its HD or not. :)

Ofcourse we put it on there for marketing, but besides just for marketing purposes, another reason we put that on our LNB/LNBFs is because many customers have the same question, so we want inform them that the LNBF will work with HD. The new batch of the ESX LNBFs (ESX521, ESX522, ESX524U, ESX241, ESX242, ESX741, and finally the ESX741U) that are being manufactured as we speak will have those wordings on it as well.

On the radio today, I heard a commercial that claimed their hardwood flooring and carpeting, were "HD TV compatible"!
Don't know what that means, but it brought a smile to my face after reading this thread. - :up

My favorites are the HD rabbit ears and HD RCA Monster cables.

As a cake topper..... last week I saw "special" high output, HD AAA batteries designed to provide the highest output allowed by the government for your HD remote controls! Wow, what have I been missing? LOL!!!
