Reuters is reporting that they are trying for spring, but they might be delayed because of bluray (I assume copy protect). They could cost Sony $900 each at first, I wonder what they will sell for?

Sony has officially denied reports from financial analysts at Merrill Lynch that the PS3 could be delayed by several months, reiterating that the console will launch this spring.

However, Sony admits that the spring release of the PlayStation 3 might be delayed if the Blu-Ray Disc specs are not approved by the industry soon enough.

CNBC this morning had commentators on that thought that even though the PS3 might initially cost $900 to make, Sony would have a price point of $400, a $500 hit per unit to the company bottom line to build market share and take market share back from Xbox360.

Per this CNN article Sony has a 70% game market share, MS 15%. Most posts I've seen for the last couple of months have been predicting a fall launch, perhaps even November. So this is old news.

BTW, the link in post 3 is not working for me. Any one else having problems with it?

What is interesting though, is that as of yesterday, Sony still insists that launch in spring is possible. ;)

Not sure why. It works fine for me.
Anyway, here is the workaround: just go to the Format War News sub-forum and open the second thread from the top (Sony PS3 may not be out until 2007 and may cost $900 to produce! ). :)

I haven't owned a game console in several years nor, for that matter, have I been doing any PC Gaming in the past 4 years. But I am certainly going to pick-up a PS3 as soon as they are available!

Uhh, you'll be pretty disappointed - PC graphics is always ahead of consoles.
Consoles at their release are roughly on-pair with PCs in terms of performance but that quickly fades away as PCs are being upgraded 'tempo presto'. Another problem is the new architecture: at their release time the new consoles have usually pretty average games as the developers got the final SDK only months before. By the time console developers become experienced enough to fully exploit the console's skills, PC graphics already left it behind in terms of sheer power and performance and at the same time even though development on PC could be more difficult thing (think about zillions of different hardware combinations), it's a gradual development (ie DX 8.0 - 8.1- 9.0 - 9.0b), no need to learn a completely new architecture, so they are pretty well versed in coding at any point in time.
