Ok,

I have a SONY WEGA KD-34XBR970 34" CRT HDTV. I use HDMI with it to my Dish vip 622. Works like a charm, always has.

But when I switch the HDMI from the Satellite Receiver to a Toshiba HD DVD player, I was able to initially get the welcome setup screen on the HD A2, but as soon as I finished the setup, it goes blank. And the SONY TV displays the no input signal for the HD input. Plug the HD DVD player into the component inputs and it works fine.

BUT without HDMI input, I can't get full upconvert on DVDs.

Anyone have any experience with this, or thoughts as to why it would work with Dish, but not with the DVD player.

I do have a Genfen HDMI switch, but I removed it for troubleshooting to make sure the problem wasn't with it.

My gut says its a HDCP handshake issue, but that leaves me uncertain how to proceed. And its not like the wife will say, oh... go buy a new HDTV.

Next trouble-shooting: connected it directly to HDMI. No image. Hit setup on the HD A2, and the setup screen comes up.

Once I exit setup it goes black, hit PLAY and it goes back to the SONY's no input on HD image. :(

Next... a firmware upgrade.

hi
the TV does 480p natively. watch DVDs at that resolution.
I would not up convert.
(i know this doesnt directly answer your question though...sorry ).

But it won't play HD DVDs on HDMI at all. Which is the problem. I can watch DVD at 480p on component video.

I am 99% sure its the SONY which is causing the problem. I don't think there is a work-around, but I am hoping I am wrong.

I did update the firmware on the Toshiba, it didn't do anything.

ah....got you

which HD DVD player is it ? Remember that the TV will not accept a 1080p signal and only will accept 720p (which it converts) and 1080i. (as well as 480i and p).

Its the A2, which maxes at 1080i.

I have tried 720p, no difference.

Need to try a home-ripped DVD to see if it makes a difference, but can't do that until I get home from work tonight.

BUT I do know that the HDMI cable works, as it will show the A2's setup screen when connected via HDMI, and the A2s display screen detects the HDMI input from the tv as being live. Its just when I try to play content.

Me thinks sony has sold a great looking CRT that is NOT HDCP compliant. :(

I see from google that there is something called the DVIMagic, a box that while advertised as a DVI amplifier, actually is a HDCP stripper. Of course that route would require getting DVI to HDMI cables, since my system is HDMI and not DVI. And I am not sure it is worth the extra effort. With two days left on an auction, it is still $100 minimum.

damn.
okay.
Then just use the component outputs and enjoy. There is no need to upconvert your SD dvds with this display and your HDDVD discs can be output at 1080i via component. The only thing you wont get is HDMI audio streams.
