Somethings never change...

That's the biggest problem with the iPhone. You are REQUIRED to only shop from Apple.

There needs to be competition in the iPhone market.

But the big difference there is I can still buy apps from other sources....
...for now.
At the moment I can't name third party apps that are crucial to the Mac platform survival.

Considering Apple latest moves
- dropping computer from the name;
- killing the Xserve server line starting today;
- alienating long time partners like Adobe;
- suing every smartphone/tablet player under the sun

I think they have decided what their future is about. And it ain't Macs.
Hence, next hardware shift like the PPC->x86 can kill off third party apps dead.

And it will be a yawn for WSJ...

It sounds like we aren't getting the whole story.

We aren't. This isn't a new policy, Sony appears to have just thought they could ignore it. Have you ever noticed you can't buy Kindle books from inside the Kindle app? The old policy is the reason why.

Note that I'm not saying I like it, it just is not anything new at all.

No I haven't! Upper right hand corner of the Kindle ipad app has a buitton " Shop in the Kindle store" Touch it and up pops Amazon. That's about as inside as it gets.

Not at all. It takes you to the Amazon website. The purchase is then made at Amazon outside of the app. Yes, that is a fine point, but it is the way it has to be done. From another story, Amazon realized that policy when they made the Kindle app, so that's the way to do it.

Thanks for that link. Seems they are making some different interpretations of it. That wasn't apparent from the earlier stories.

Personally I don't like either the old or new versions of the policy. But then, Apple never asks me!! :)

If you start with the axiom that there are 2 types of products - DOA or stolen from Apple - life itself becomes magic.
Everybody owes you money! Just because Apple says so...

I've tended to purchase ibooks, but really, 30%? 30%? For what value added?

Books will now get bought from Amazon outside the app.

Was looking at the Verizon iphone from a convergence standpoint. Now not so sure.

Personally I don't think from a user standpoint, that you'll see major differences in how it is done today to how it might be in the future. I figure I'll continue to get my ebooks wherever the best price happens to be on the day I go looking and read it on one of many ereader apps, pretty much the way I'm doing it now.

Maybe in the Kindle app, I'll see a direct, in app way to buy the book instead of going to the website. I don't doubt for a moment that Amazon and others will just make some adjustments and life will go on.

But that's just me... :)

Possibly. These are big corporations, they'll fuss and feud and come to some arrangement in their best interest. And of course, that might not be in our best interest. If the 'new' terms become onerous, I have many ways to read a book although I do prefer to do it on the iPad.
