Ergen says E* and D* use different HD Standards?? I thoght they were both mpeg 4? Or maybe he is talking about KU or Ka? Or perhaps he is talking out of his butt again?

The two DBS providers teaming up on a national HD platform might be trickier, since DirecTV uses different HDTV standards than Dish, Ergen said.

Perhaps E* is for sale???

But as for a potential EchoStar-DirecTV merger, Ergen said, “I think there’s a merger on the table, feasibly. It’s not us, and I think that one’s going to take all of 2007 to get done.” He didn’t elaborate further on that topic during the question-and-answer session.

He clearly said "IT's not us." He must mean that Directv might merge with someone or that he is talking about Malone swapping the stocks and taking over Directv . That has to pass approval before it can be completed.

Just because they are mpeg4 means nothing. Both would be encrypted differently. One would be Nagravision and the other would be whatever Directv uses (I forget the name of it). You would need the receivers to decrypt both. That would also mean a new card too. The costs would be very high for charlie. It likely is not just a matter of a quick software patch to enable this. It would be much more than that.

Bountykiller,

The other issue is that Dish uses 8SPK Turbo's modulation scheme for HD, which uses bandwidth more efficiently than QPSK's modulation.

I'm pretty sure DirecTV uses QSPK, and not 8SPK or the better 8SPK Turbo.

If Charlie is now saying that they may not merge then why was he all for it before? This seems to be contradictory.

DirecTV uses DVB-S2 on their new satellites, and it uses bandwidth even more efficiently than 8PSK turbo. Someone posted a TSReader a while back showing they get 50mbps per transponder on the Spaceway sats.

Can 622 Output Digital Signals via Coax/Antenna Output?

No audio on January 9 "House" from either 622
