Snow on the roof

The DISH (company truck out of Denver) installer came out today. Snowing with about an inch of snow on the roof. He got out his inclinometer and said the new dish to point to the 129 would have to go on the roof to clear some trees. He was ready to do it but the roof was too slick to work on.

Also mentioned that normally it would be a DISH 1000 to point to the 110, 119, & 129, but he was out of them. so he would just add a single dish to point to the 129, and that I would get a better signal. Is this true??

Also said there was another "new dish" 1000 something or other that was better yet and that I might get that as they were on order. What is that??? Is it better?? or is this installer "full of it"

Actually he seemed like a pretty knowledgable guy and pretty personable. Called before he came out and showed up on time.

Trying to get set upfor another call next week.


Also said that the VOOM channels were no longer on the 61.5 as I suggested that as a possibility. He says they switched most channels to the 129. More BS or truth????

he was talking about 1000.2 it is try dish keep running out of the DPP LNB for them so we have to use 3 PD duals and signal are week so in that case i would do dish 500 point at 129 only. or wait until 1000.2 LNB are available

VOOM channels are on 61.5. VOOM is mirrored on 61.5 and 129.

The single dish for 129 works fine, especially in the NW USA, where the 129 is weaker. But yeah, VOOM is also on 61.5, and a single for that would work too.

The only way to get a single dish solution is with some flavor of the Dish 1000.

When ever you have a single dish focusing -solely- on one bird your going to have a maximized signal.

To sum it up...

Everything he said is true, except for - "you can still get the HD channels on either 61.5 or 129."

And since the Dish 1000.2 has a larger dish pan than the Dish 1000, it should work better.

Yeah, my office keeps telling me that 61.5 doesn't carry ALL the high def channels that 129 does for our (Milwaukee) area. So I don't know what to believe. I try to stay out of it and just do what the work order says.

My installer called back with my new appointment time, so I got to ask him some questions. He said that he would most likely leave my 500 that points to the 110 and the 119. He would also leave the 500 that points to the 148. He would add, another 500 that would only point to the 129. He said that this would give me the best signal, and that anytime you could point a dish to just one sat it would be best. So three dishes, and four satallites and a DPP 44 switch, not to mention the 622.

The Hi def chs are on 129 and mirrored off the 61.5..The Voom Chs are on the 61.5 and mirroed off the 129..Basically the tech was trying to push you into a dish that will give you better signal.....D-1000 sucks..I would rather have the 61.5..I would rather install a system that takes more work and more time to get that customer a better signal....The snow on the roof is a big problem..
You don't want anyone poking holes in your roof when it is wet or has snow on it...The tech is doing you a solid..

No one seems to know if the 61.5 will give me a good signal out here in Wyoming. I used to have VOOM when it was a seperate service that operated off the 61.5. Not a great signal as it pointed pretty much horizonally toward the east. Rain fade was a problem.
I tried to get him to give the 61.5 a shot as it would not have to be a roof mount, but he was adament that there would not be all the channels that the 129 has.

For locals and future regional's, such as RSN, you will not get you all the HD programming available for you if you don't use a 129 in areas not desinated for the 61.5. Ditto if you are in an area such as the Northeast, Florida(most), and Southern Texas, you will not get the locals if you don't use a 61.5 but use a 129.

All the "national" HD sold is on both. Most of the US can see the 61.5 satellite, but most of it has been desinated as needing a 129. As well noted many have found the 61.5 to provide a better signal at this time.

Not sure what's left on 148 which also use to be a mirror for HD channels on the west coast (mpeg-2 only).

Since he is in Wyoming, the 148 dish is for SD locals.

If you are in part of the Denver DMA and authorized the 4 Denver HD locals, then you will need 129 to receive them.

However, if you really want to know if your property can get 61.5 or not, and the tech has finished the installation for 129, then do the following:

- Mark the Elevation setting on the dish.
- Mark the Azimuth setting on the dish bracket and mast.
- Adjust the Elevation for 61.5 in your zip code.
- Swing/Twist the dish on the mast towards the southeast and see if you can get 61.5.
- If you do, then peak it by very very slightly adjusting the Elevation and Azimuth.

Do not touch the SKEW if there is one. Dish 500 (20") will have SKEW set on the 90 mark, while the Dish 300 (18") does not have a Skew setting.
