Smart TV App Sound

Before I go digging to find an optical cable I want to make sure I am on the right track.
In order to get the sound through my surround sound receiver I need to run an optical cable from the tv to the receiver.... correct? There wasn't much info in the "manual".
I'm sure it doesn't matter but the tv is the UN65F8000 Samsung.

So a bit more exploring and I found that my tv and my audio receiver both have ARC. I hooked it up and it is working but only but changing inputs - one for fios and one for the smart tv apps. I am using 2 hdmi cables to do this. Is this the way it is supposed to be? Or did I miss something. Let me know if this should go to audio receivers rather than tv!
