Small Town Cable Operator Sentenced on Piracy

yeah, in case of my power I probably could do more harsh to regular member like me (booh !) - Iceberg is calm person ... by my years of moderating experience I would stop the thread and provide a link to main thread to continue discussion, as it totally non-relevant to the FTA forum and duplicate first one.
My 2 cents.
But the boss have own rules. And like to check my pants each time of clashing :D

I rarely venture outside the FTA forums any more.
I don't think Dish piracy posts . . .and long drawn-out discussions, are very worthwhile here.
That's just not the focus of this forum (FTA department).
If I want to know, Google will find me a dozen forums chocked-full of such info.
However, this story was a little different and very amusing. :)

BUT . . .

What would be nice, is to have a one-post notice here in the FTA department, with a link to the thread elsewhere.
Then, ya ask Iceberg to lock our thread.
That would force all our comments to the other/original thread for all to see.
And probably satisfy everyone.

Is that really necessary? Then we would have to bump shoulders with more of those DN folks, who, like most of us, don't wish to stray very far from homebase on a dangerous detour through foreign territory.:)

I don't see any problem with multiple postings (within reason), being new at FTA AND forums, If I see something and want to read it again later or need a reminder, it comes in handy to be in more than one place.....;)

I personally, think that the stuff discused in the FTA forum is more informative than the the stuff in the DTV or DN forums. They have 20 page threads about what channels each or the other might come out with in HD. 20 pages of speculation! Sounds more like the stock market than an intelligent discusion.

Hacking has always existed and it always will. Same as crime has always existed and always will. In order to get rid of either you net to get to the root of the problem. Money. People will always do anything for money, illegal or legal.

When dish closes their cards tight like DTV then the hackers will move on to whatever they can. Maybe in 3 years there will be posts of SA hacks. If that happens then all the hakers will get get 30" dishes and linear lnbs. Round and round.

It is nice to hear about someone that stole the meaning of FTA getting sent to prison. I think this is relevant to FTA if only as a reminder that we're legal FTA viewers not those guys that just sell "FTA" Dish Network dishes and advertise "hundreds of high definition satellite TV channels" on their "FTA" websites.

That's wrong twist of original info - it was just incorrect placement of the quote.
He didn't use FTA, he didn't sell FTA, he didn't know about FTA at all. :(

Oh boy !

He didn't use FTA, he didn't sell FTA, he didn't know sh*t about FTA at all. :(

Oh boy !
Right, he was just pirating Dish Network with hacked Dish Network receivers according to the press release. My lumping him in with the eyepatch gang using "FTA" to describe 3rd party receivers running hacked software to pirate Dish Network is unfair. If he had known about real FTA he might have tried to rebroadcast some of this good stuff and screwed it all up for the rest of us!

Ok, back to my legal FTA channel surfing. ;)

My innocent [re]post generated quite a controversy, the dynamics of which are rather revealing. Rules, opinions, suggestions, judgments; a critical mass of remarks that tend to suffocate the living body of this thread.

Humor is never irrelevant. FTA folks can always use a laugh about outrageous happenings on the dark side of the satellite moon: subscriber services & piracy. First off, I couldn't allow that worthwhile gem of a human interest story to slip by. Secondly, knowledge about the security status of encryption is desirable. It significantly affects the value of used FTA equipment, and smart buyers are aware. Not everyone here is financially strong and able to pay top dollar for the better toys they would love to have or give. In the past, a sudden major change provoked a mass dumping of unwanted non obsolete FTA boxes, and the money savings certainly were relevant and appreciated. We are entering a period where that can happen again. Just a little something to look forward to.

None of my commentary would have much relevance on a DN forum, except maybe to provoke another Hatfield-McCoy feud. The hacking issue is a wound that refuses to heal as long as the war on piracy continues. FTA does not invite the likes of such drama, because our atmosphere is pure clean community fun. Where here can you find a lone cynic or a smart-aleck? Not that I don't enjoy someone who invokes controversy, once in a while. Don't misjudge me as being too serious, I'm not.

I see an easy solution to allow coexistence between the two major forums. The difference in error detection and correction algorithms are the main source of conflict here. All division and disagreement would immediately cease, the moment they fully encrypt their forum. :)

You changing turns so fast, I barely follow you. :D

'had known', 'might have' - he was to far from your ideas, really don't need to give him the color.
And the weird idea sell FTA channels using FTA receivers ... again, that's YOUR invention.
Defenitly you try more attempts to tie the inifo to FTA forum without merits.

I guess you lost me. The entire point is he is OPPOSITE the FTA forum. That is what made it interesting. But nevermind, I've said enough.

dont let smitty get under your skin..
He's one of those who would rather see one thread with 500 pages then a couple different threads because god forbid it might be close to something that might have been posted

As posted above, some folks stay in the FTA area. If they dont have dish, why check there?

Main oppose to split thread idea - ppl lost between them, some info duplicating, some different wrong idea comes up because other thread already cover that, etc, etc
Why then symposiums, colloquiums, conventions creating ?
I haven't seen for last 12 years any pluses in cross-posting.
I would ask you about Wiki - are you against the idea too; if follow your logic, then yes.
Science wouldn't survive if accept your rule. :(

I get the subtle difference that negates the argument. But like you, I've said enough.

but as posted above some folks don't leave the FTA area. Now if it was in the Dish area then yeah there would be a point. But the fact of the matter is some folks stay in the FTA area because they don't care to wander into the Dish area. And since it is involved with stealing Dish Network then it has merit in the FTA area. Maybe he didnt use FTA boxes but using illegal programming devices in the Dish boxes is pretty much the same thing :)

I find it funny (actually pretty pathetic) that you are throwing this big of a hissy fit because something was double posted. Does it really bother you that much that a thread was posted in two spots?

Like I say, Satelliteguys doesn't get charged by the threads that are opened. :D

funny how you dont get pissy when people start new threads on setting up their system. In "your" world there would be one 4000 page thread on "how to set up my system" with posts from numerous different threads for people to wade through. As Scott has said numerous times, the FTA area is totally different than other areas here and he lets us run with that. Scott doesnt come in here and tell us how to run this area. Why? Because we are pretty self serving. He pops in once in a while but he knows that we handle it pretty good ourselves. The FTA area is a unique area here at Satguys and that's how we like it :)

Why then symposiums, colloquiums, conventions creating ?

can I get that in english please?

Google & Yahoo; they do pretty much the same thing, but they both exist, and do well.

If it wasn't posted here, I would have never read it.

As being a member that does not visit the Dish or DTV forums, I found the post interesting because someone was charged with doing what the Satelliteguys.us group so strongly opposes..... the stealling of TV. There are a lot of members here in the FTA area that like me were pleased to hear this. It is quite common to hear about people stealing the signal, and the FTA forum goes through its "help me steal" posts from users from time to time. The moderators are great in their efforts in trying to keep these posts deleted, but they slip through and the members are quick to point them out. I just find it dissapointing that the piracy issue has not been eliminated completely by now, and the true FTA can shine through. The piracy issue is like a big black cloud in this hobby that needs to be eliminated. This story is like a ray of sunlight shinning through.

I too appreciate the post being here in FTA. I never go to any other forums except sometimes the FTA C band sub-forum. This item has it's own separate relevance to strictly FTA folks.

It's bad enough for the FTA hobby that people steal signals and the incredible fact that someone was stealing content and then selling it is newsworthy and interesting reading for all of us who only visit the FTA forum.

I check the scrambled signals from time to time to see if anything might be temporarily in the clear, but on the rare occasion when I do find something, I don't even watch it. It's just something I do for fun as part of enjoying the hobby, sort of like catch and release fishing.

A clarification about posting

Okay, let’s really get complicated and overly technical about a post that I have been contemplating.

The subject is the addition of LNBFs to a .74 cm DirecPC/Direcway/Hughesnet dish used for satellite internet service. Hughesnet (term used to mean Hughesnet and all its prior names) manufactured and sold the side arms used attach circular LNBFs for the purpose acquiring the signals of their then-subsidiary/affiliated company DirecTV. These side arms could also be used for Dishnetwork and/or Bell in Canada. These side arms are no longer being sold and are hard to find. I have seen do-it yourself versions of side arms posted on the net and one of them using PVC pipe prompted me to take it a few steps further and build an arm made of PVC and the distance to the dish can be adjusted to accommodate various types of LNBFs including both circular and linear types.

So my options are:

-Post this in the Direct TV forum because that is the original intention by Hughesnet.

-Post this in the Dish Network forum because that is what I use it for.

-Post this in the FTA forum because they are most likely to grasp the idea of using an old Hughesnet dish for multiple satellites including the mix of circular and linear LNBFs. My mod could also be used for other types of dishes.

-Post in all three and in any other that might be able to use the modification.

-Don’t post at all to avoid the flaming posts and keep the knowledge to myself.

In my opinion, no man or woman in these forums knows everything about a particular field and is gathering only from his or her experiences. When they step beyond that realm, it shows.
