October 23, 2008 - A cable-tv operator in Wagram, NC (population 780) was sentenced to 14 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to illegally rebroadcasting Dish Network programming, the Douglas County-based satellite TV company said Tuesday.
Glenn White, who ran Wagram Cable in Wagram, N.C., acknowledged intercepting at least 17 Dish Network channels and rebroadcasting them to his 242 customers between May 2005 and July 2006, according to a court stipulation. The programming services that White pirated were worth at least $37,234.

Wagram is only 1.5 sq miles in size. Not all that hard to cable. At an average of maybe 2 people per household, he could have subbed everyone, given another two years.

Lets hope N3 actually works and stops all these guys from making so much illegal cash.

This was big back in the VC hacks, VCII+and VCRS put a stop to it.

They're already talking about N3, maybe if they switch it all to mpeg4 would slow it down awhile. But not for long.Wish they would switch to what directv is using!

Would be nice before re-posting same info to check by Search if it already done !

We have the info and long thread about.

This is a very big place. I've been in and out of here for years, and never ever touched on the DN forum. It just doesn't attract my interest. I wonder how many posters and lurkers have the same narrrow vision problem? Perhaps my post has informed more readers, closer to the FTA zone, who won't hear it as an echo. Might it be off-topic to FTA? I think not, but let the view count tally a vote, should this thread remain alive and interesting. At the moment, it seems to be headed in a positive direction, exposing weaknesses in the system, rather than dwelling on the level of those who exploit it. Besides, punishing and setting harsh examples never accomplishes much in the long run, unless maybe we resort to publicly chopping off fingers on a PPV televised event. The foolish pirate obviously suffers from excessive confidence, along with a significant lack of touch with reality. That combination is very high risk, and he may have already lost a finger or two.

Sorry to flap another pancake on the stack, but somehow our two lane thread might merge into one, exposed to more of those who will connect and benefit. The next time I find interesting news, I'll be certain to at least search into all corners of this site, before I post.

Just my thoughts, and hopefully no one else has already posted them.

They make a good point. It's not that I'm reckless or untrainable, living for anarchy or the love of chaos. Oftentimes my mistakes remind me of the value of thinking and acting without the box. Sometimes I'm simply wrong.

Don't waste your wish just yet...
At least one provider did just that. Premiere, a large German Pay-TV company, involved in both satellite and cable recently switched from Nagravision as their provider of security to NDS's Videoguard, what DTV uses. There hasn't been any proof of that system being compromised. That is, until now. The European pay-tv satellite provider Premiere, running NDS encryption Videoguard, has been hacked. Files are available now for FREE download on PUBLIC forums. You can Google the German articles [to translate] that explain the situation. One story stated that Videoguard is considered the most secure of all. I thought Iredeto2 bragged that. From what I gathered, Videoguard isn't fully hacked, and neither is N3. Of course, NDS gives no hint of concern, saying it remains as secure as ever on all platforms.

Another foreign news article that doesn't exactly quiet the issue: Orbit denies switching out of Nagra to Irdeto | Orbit Satellite Television

dont let smitty get under your skin..
He's one of those who would rather see one thread with 500 pages then a couple different threads because god forbid it might be close to something that might have been posted

As posted above, some folks stay in the FTA area. If they dont have dish, why check there?

only reason I knew about it is because I do travel outside of the area (as a mod its kinda a given) :)

I'm one of those that would not of ever read about it if it were not posted here.... (in this thread)

Stick around, it's Friday; who knows where in space this thread might go...

Few Over-the-Air Viewers Remain
23 October 2008 2:48 AM, PDT
News from Studio Briefing

Suggesting that the days of over-the-air broadcasting may be numbered, a new report indicates that just 15 percent of all households still receive broadcasts via antennas, with about 10 percent of those planning to sign up for cable or satellite providers when the switch to digital transmission takes place on February 17. The report also indicated that about 20 percent may not purchase converter boxes and instead rely more on DVD and other entertainment. "Terrestrial viewers tend to be more likely to use alternative video entertainment forms such as DVD rentals and broadband video, and the transition may push them further in that direction," the report said.

How about mentioning an alternate like FTA?

I bet one would be surprised at the cable operators who do this. It wouldn't surprise me if someone who had a large family didn't have an "additional" receiver on everybody's account to add some premiums to their small cable company in a small town.

who cares seriously...cripes. So someone posted a thread that MIGHT have a duplicate thread somewhere here on satellites. So what???
So what would happen if I posted a duplicate thread that might be somewhere else? Ya gonna ridicule me and say "do a search?"

Its posted here and we FTA folks like that. As posted above, a fair amount of us dont go to the Dish area because we dont have to. If you don't like how the FTA area is run, then go to another area here and leave us be.

compromise

I rarely venture outside the FTA forums any more.
I don't think Dish piracy posts . . .and long drawn-out discussions, are very worthwhile here.
That's just not the focus of this forum (FTA department).
If I want to know, Google will find me a dozen forums chocked-full of such info.
However, this story was a little different and very amusing. :)

BUT . . .

What would be nice, is to have a one-post notice here in the FTA department, with a link to the thread elsewhere.
Then, ya ask Iceberg to lock our thread.
That would force all our comments to the other/original thread for all to see.
And probably satisfy everyone.

nah. I dont see why we cant have two threads.

The DIsh one seems to be for the smart alecks (read some of the comments) and this one seems to be for the FTA side of it...well until someone whined about "doing a search"

I cant believe he hadnt gone after me for double posting. When Glorystar1 posts about a new channel in the G* forum, I usually try and cross promote it here for the FTA'ers to see.

no harm done there. Its not like we get charged per thread opened ;)
