I just setup my first FTA system and I've gotten the bug :) Right now I have a non-motorized primestar dish. Today I've pointed it at AMC5 @ 79W, but I think I'm probably going to bounce around, especially if I hear of certain basketball feeds at 91, etc. The trick is the dish is about 100 feet from the house, and I dont have a meter. I DO get a good wifi signal out there though, so I figured a good way to solve this problem was to get a slingbox. I've been wanting one anyway to connect up to my DirecTV HD DVR but this just pushes me over the edge :)

I have a Fortec Mercury II FTA receiver, and I'm wondering if anyone has set this up before? I have zero experience with a slingbox, so I'm wondering if either it has the IR codes or if you can custom program IR codes? I might check some other boards, but of course I don't want to get labeled a hacker, which I'm sure most people who want to get FTA receivers working with sling are doing (happens all the time in the Tivo forums)

I don't know whether it's possible to get the slingbox to work with a FTA receiver, but I would recommend getting one for the DirecTV. My brother-in-law purchased one that I installed on my network while he lived in the Netherlands. He had his own Tivo and could then watch whatever US tv he wanted while overseas. Definitely a cool device.

It is possible to use a slingbox to control an FTA receiver. In fact, I have a slingbox connected to my Pansat 3500.

You can check through slingbox's message boards to see if they posted a remote control file (usually in the BIN format) for your receiver. If you have one of those fancy programmable remotes (like a harmony one) that you can connect to your PC, then you can make your own BIN IR remote file for your satellite receiver.

I think the process just involves the programmable remote "memorizing" all the keys from the FTA receiver's remote.

The Slingbox works quite well with both of my Pansat receivers along with my DSR-922. Its kinda cool being away from the house and moving the C-band dish and Ku through the arc. Quality isn't too bad either.
