The new Hopper has the Sling and wi-fi adapter built-in. So, it's a bit neater.
But, why do you need to attach your slingbox to your Hopper? It's nice to have full remote control, having access to the unit's guides, menus, and on-screen DVR pages. But, the sling adapter thru Dish Anywhere pretty much controls anything you need to control. (Although, missing channels is a biggie, I admit.)
As for you and your wife being able to log into a slingbox simultaneously from two different locations, you must have a magic slingbox, as it is not possible with any of the slingboxes I've had over the years. I think you may be mistaken. I'd like to see you try it again with your slingbox, and let us know if you are successful.
