I still think the commercialization of sports was a mistake. If it's a fair competition and not scripted entertainment, any and all comers should be able to broadcast it however they like as news.

Locast will still be an option for sometime. I think with the ruling the Judge made, that Locast will have to re-work their operation. It sounds like that may be the way they are going. At least the judge did not just shut them down. There has to be a way to satisfy everyone, or at least find something that does not violate copyright laws.And now it looks like Locast may no longer be an option.

Certainly what I think, but I have to say Engadget a good source says it is a major blow they may not be able to overcome.
I just got an e-Mail from Locast. They’re stopping the interruptions to ask for a donation for all users. They think that this is the tweak that will allow them to continue.

The court concluded that by interrupting programming to ask users for donations, and by suspending those interruptions based on whether a user makes contributions, Locast actually was charging a fee, not merely seeking a voluntary contribution. The court then concluded that revenues Locast collects in this manner exceed the cost of operating the service because funds are used to add new markets, rendering Locast ineligible to use the copyright exemption for non-profits (17 U.S.C. 111(a)(5)).
Although we disagree with this interpretation and are exploring our legal options to contest it, out of respect for the court's order,
Locast is suspending immediately all programming interruptions to request donations.
This means that anyone located in a market we serve who signs up for Locast will get the service without interruption, regardless of whether or not they donate.
Of course, it is up to you whether or not to contribute to Locast. But if you currently contribute, we humbly request that you continue to do so. And if you don't contribute, we hope that you will do so if you can afford it.

Can I make a suggestion and let's take this conversation about Locast and take it to the Cord Cutters Thread. This started out as a Sinclair Thread and now it's turned into Locast. Some people might miss some valuable info that has been put on this thread about Locast.
I'd say Locast's days are numbered. Money talks and the networks have the money and they can afford the best lawyers.
Sinclair has one “station” here that carried both the CBS and Fox programming, so if Sinclair and Dish don’t come to an agreement, the AFC and NFC games on Sunday would need to be OTA.

I doubt it, Locast is dead now or at least suspend operations,
Got this e-Mail. It sucks because I could use Firefox’s location spoofer and watch Baltimore locals to watch Lamar Jackson every week…
Options to select from are:
1) They were in this to get more money than they were legally entitled to.
2) They felt that without prodding and interrupting broadcasts, people would never donate enough money to make the project solvent.
3) Their lawyers felt that even legit non-profit could not legally do what they were doing, or the certainty that they could was not remotely high enough to justify the cost of continuing.
I just don't think they had deep enough pockets to take on the broadcasters. Lawyers aren't cheap!
It is interesting, you mentioned that. I feel the Networks should be working with Locast to get their stations better coverage within their DNA. It would be a win-win for both sides. All TV stations should be streaming in this day anyway. They stream their news, why not the whole thing, via IP address. Charge a low fee to get all of the stations out to everyone. I would gladly pay $5 a month to get all Portland OR stations streaming.
The stations make more on retrans fees than advertising, they want viewers paying for their channels.
