Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is yet another graphic novel brought to film. I have to admit I loved the original Sin City movie, especially "The Customer is Always Right" segment that is explored more deeply in this movie.
This sequel follows the same stylized format in look and feel as its predecessor. The movie is shot in black and white to astonishing effect, using color to highlight things like a lit cigarette, a flame, color of hair, red lips, green eyes, or just an overcoat. Even in when the entire picture is in black and white there are effects making the whites pure and solid. Having glasses reflect pure white as they might be drawn in a graphic novel, or highlighting shadows and light streaks. Sometimes it is a little jarring or distracting, but most of the time it works to fantastic effect.

This is not an adaptation, but a translation of a graphic novel to film. However, when it comes down to it, none of the style in the world can save a movie with a lousy story. Thank goodness that the story, though simplistic and two dimensional, was gripping and entertaining. The cast is a treasure-trove of astounding talent including Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, and Powers Booth. Each sell their intentionally two dimensional characters to exquisite effect.
A warning, though. This movie is very, very violent. The femme fatales use their, um, assets in alluring and provocative ways. Not much is left to the imagination. This is not a kiddie movie and not for anyone with weak constitutions. There is no language, but this movie, for the the lack of a better term, is graphic!
This iteration of Sin City is actually three or four stories braided together and tied into a little knot at the end. All three are gripping, but this intertwining effect makes the movie a little hard to follow at the beginning. Stick with it, pay attention and you will be glad you did.
The movie is told through inner monologues of the main characters of each story. A way to try to keep the stories separate is to pay attention whose monologue you are listening to. as the stories progress they get more and more intertwined until everything comes together quite nicely.
If you saw the original Sin City (especially the opening sequence) and liked it, there is no reason you won't like this one. If you didn't see the original, I highly recommend you do, though it is not a prerequisite to enjoy this movie.
