more highlights

ABSOLUTE POWER (R) (1997)An expert jewel thief (Clint Eastwood) inadvertently witnesses a sexual assault and murder involving the President of the United States (Gene Hackman), and soon finds himself at the wrong end of a deadly cover-up. Eastwood also directed this gripping thriller, based on the best-selling novel and co-starring Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Judy Davis and E.G. Marshall.
THE BAXTER (PG13) (2005)Michael Showalter ("The State," "Stella") directs, writes and stars in this charming romantic comedy as Elliot Sherman, a nice-guy accountant with a pushover personality who decides, egged on by a mousy office temp (Michelle Williams), to take a stand for once in his life when his beautiful fiancee (Elizabeth Banks) is pursued by another man. Justin Theroux costars in this likable debut with Peter Dinklage, Zak Orth, Paul Rudd and Michael Ian Black.

UNDISCOVERED (PG13) (2005)Struggling young Los Angeles artists fall in love while trying to make it in show business in this romantic comedy about a wannabe rock star (Steven Strait) and the aspiring actress (Pell James) who endeavors to help his career while resisting his obvious charm. Fisher Stevens costars with Carrie Fisher, Peter Weller and Shannyn Sossamon in this wryly funny look at love and Hollywood.

SAHARA (PG13) (2005)Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz star in this breathless adaptation of Clive Cussler's novel about an explorer/adventurer, Dirk Pitt, who becomes embroiled in a ruthless African dictator's evil plot when he travels to the Sahara in search of a long-lost Civil War battleship. Steve Zahn, Delroy Lindo, William H. Macy, Lambert Wilson and Lennie James costar in this box office hit directed by Breck Eisner.

UNDEAD (R) (2003)This acclaimed no-budget slice of sci-fi horror from Australia stars Felicity Mason and Mungo McKay as two survivors of a zombie onslaught that results from a rain of deadly meteorites. Filmed in the gonzo-gory style of early-career Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson, this inventive cult hit from brother-directors Michael and Peter Spierig has been hailed as "a modestly budgeted but precociously inventive horror pic" ("Variety").

THE BIG WHITE (R) (2005)Two men, each desperate to escape the confines of a snowbound Alaskan existence, oppose each other at every turn over a life insurance claim that one wants and the other repeatedly denies. Robin Williams and Giovanni Ribisi star with Holly Hunter, Woody Harrelson, Tim Blake Nelson and Alison Lohman in this Coen Brothers-inflected tale of greed and (very) dumb luck.

THE KING (R) (2005)After his discharge from the Navy, a troubled young man seeks out the father he never knew, bringing a storm of seduction and murder to his new family. Gael Garcia Bernal, William Hurt, Pell James, Laura Harring and Paul Dano star.

THE CHICKEN CHRONICLES (PG) Steve Guttenberg stars in this raunchy teen comedy set in 1969 as a high school student who will go to any lengths to impress a pretty cheerleader and lose his virginity, while juggling his job at a chicken joint and trying not to get thrown out of Beverly Hills High - a fate that could get him sent to Vietnam. The legendary Phil Silvers costars in this lost classic with Lisa Reeves, Ed Lauter, Tracey Vogel and Branscombe Richmond.

THE GREAT NEW WONDERFUL (R) (2005)Writer-director Danny Leiner's lovely, lyrical comedy follows a disparate group of New Yorkers who make their way in the city a year after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Chief among them are gifted psychologist Dr. Trabulous (Tony Shalhoub), who makes a startling breakthrough with a depressed patient (Jim Gaffigan), and bakery shop owner Emme (Maggie Gyllenhaal), who learns the downside of success in the cake business. Edie Falco, Judy Greer, Tom McCarthy, Olympia Dukakis, Naseeruddin Shah and Sharat Saxena costar in this memorable slice of life.

SHAME (TV14) This stunning documentary tells the true story of international human rights icon Mukhtaran Mai, a Pakistani peasant who was gang-raped and publicly shamed in her village, but used her trauma to spark a legal revolution that exposed centuries of brutal tribal conflict and government mismanagement.

QUEER DUCK: THE MOVIE (TV14 - LD) (2006)America's favorite animated homosexual waterfowl ("He Can't Even Fly Straight!") comes to the big screen with this feature version that boasts musical numbers and a plot that involves Queer Duck and his longtime companion Openly Gator splitting up thanks to the presence of unexpected love interest Lola Buzzard. Created by Mike Reiss of "The Simpsons," this hilarious cartoon comedy stars the vocal talents of JM J. Bullock, Tim Curry, David Duchovny, Billy West, Jackie Hoffman and Conan O'Brien (as himself).

LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS (PG) (2004)Jim Carrey stars in this lavish, hilarious adaptation of the darkly comic children's book series about a trio of put-upon orphans whose relationship with their greedy "uncle" Count Olaf is a less than heartwarming one. Meryl Streep costars with Liam Aiken, Emily Browning, Billy Connolly and Luis Guzman in this box office hit from director Brad Silberling ("Moonlight Mile").

INTO THE FIRE (2006) (TV14 - L) (2005)A trio of New Yorkers find themselves united by the grief resulting from various personal tragedies in this emotionally powerful drama starring Sean Patrick Flanery, JoBeth Williams, Melina Kanakaredes, Ron McLarty and Ed Lauter.

THE WEATHER MAN (R) (2005)Nicolas Cage stars in this comedy-drama as a Chicago weather man whose personal life enters free-fall even as his career is potentially about to take off with a new job on a national television morning show. Michael Caine and Hope Davis costar.

THE LAST HOLIDAY (PG13) (2006)Queen Latifah stars in this likable comedy as Georgia Byrd, a single woman who has played by the rules all her life: living frugally, putting up with an arrogant boss, and suffering in silence over her crush on a coworker. When she learns she has only three weeks to live, however, Georgia suddenly blooms, vacationing at a posh European resort, taking guff from no one, and embracing her destiny with hilarious gusto. LL Cool J and Timothy Hutton star.

WAITING (R) (2005)The waiters at a theme restaurant face a long night of dealing with their obnoxious customers, a crazed chef, a controlling boss, as well as their own thwarted ambitions and stalled romances in this workplace comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Anna Faris.

COWBOY DEL AMOR (TV14 - L) (2005)Director Michele Ohayon's documentary takes an amusing look at Ivan Thompson, a New Mexico "cowboy Cupid" who, for $3000, arranges marriages between American men and Mexican women, a process that does not always result in cross-cultural true love. Nominated for the 2005 Writers Guild of America Documentary Screenplay Award.
