Should the 508 PVR fan always be on?

where do you see the temperture?

Digital Thermometer set on top of 508's case near the back over the vent slots.

hmm... are our 508s different, or am i just blind. I don't see any digital temperature readout. Do i have to take the cover off to see it?

External, separate, not connected, put it anywhere, not made by dish, etc.
Sort of like an air conditioning thermometer used for servicing air conditioners. Sorry if I confused things.

I'll be shopping for a thermal fan controller tomorrow. It seems like the best way to fix this problem. There's some decent ones to buy or even make if you understand a bit about electronics.
