You don't pay a $5/month fee if it is the only receiver/dvr on the account.
You certainly do. I am only getting one receiver. It's a HD DVR. There is a $10 HD access fee and a $1 discounted $5 fee for DVR service.

Lease equipment will replace for free but charge 19.95 shipping and handling to cover the shipping the new reciver to you and the prepaid label back to us.
Now protection plan covers that 19.95 for you.

Ahh ok, so it appears I was informed correctly on this. He didn't mention the 19.95 but I suppose I could get over that.
If I'm 20 months in and the DVR messes up, does my replacement DVR come with a shiny new 2 year agreement?
no as it replaced as equipment swap do to non working box.
Only time the 2 years is going to come into play is if your an old customer with own equipment nd no protection plan.
But leased equipment with no protection plan your fine and dont have to worry about it.
Unreasonable customers like susan just make it worst for everyone else.
Directv puts there agreements in normal size font on there website in plain english . We will even send you a copy in plain english . before you even sign up. But part of the terms people never read are labled all over the place but susan apparently has an issue with. It says in normal size pring in the plastic cover from the access card that comes with any new reciever that activating will start a new two year from time of activation. Not like we hide our terms of service.
I was assuming they were talking about the DVR fee.
How does my stating my opinions on an Internet message board make it "worst [sic] for everyone else?" (I won't even ask how you feel me disagreeing with DirecTV's policies makes me "unreasonable.")
The front page of DirecTV.com curently features annoying jingle bell ad for Pay-Per-View, DirecTV News, an ad for GamePlan, a video of boxing, an ad for DirecTV active, an ad for DirecTV Cinema (more pay-per-view), A "what to record" DVR feature, a top customer questions box (none about terms of service) and the claim that "DirecTV stomps the competition." There is a link in the page footer, in roughly four point type, for "terms and conditions" but click on that and you get legalese for their website policies, not their TV service.
I'm sure all the service conditions are written on the website, somewhere, but it's hardly front and center and, in fact, isn't readily available ANYWHERE I can see from the front page at all, including in the drop down menus at the top.
I was never mailed a copy of service conditions "before I signed up" (in 1999) and since most people sub over the phone, signing up and scheduling an install all in one phone call, I kinda' doubt DirecTV says, "Great, but first we want to mail you our terms of service, so we can be sure you're OK with them. Call us back if you still want the service." Most people have their receivers/system put in by an installer, who also inserts their access card and activates their service as part of his job, so they'd never see what you say is on the access card packaging.
In my case, none of your examples are even the "reason" I'm supposedly still under contract. I've now been told (in a fourth DirecTV explanation, completely different from the first three) that it's because I accepted a $5/month discount from an agent after our system went south at one point and required multiple calls/machinations to get my programming reauthorized. Again, something that was never once said, or even hinted at, to me in any previous communication with DirecTV, or when the offer (something I never even asked for) was made. Because, gee, if someone had said ... Hey, we'll give you $5 a month off (for only 12-months I might add), but if you leave we'll charge you $20/month instead for two full years, I would have plainly said no, having already been unhappy with DirecTV at that point and on the fence about continuing our service. (Wow, you'll give me $60 and I only have to pay $480 for it. What a deal!)
"stonecold" you're welcome to disagree but it's far from just me that find these terms onerous and surprising (i.e. they never knew about them until they're on hook). Every single day, on every single DirecTV forum, (new and different) users are posting about suddenly finding themselves under contract and unable to leave DirecTV ... And these are experienced users, the kind who frequent these sorts of obscure, online places. (A very small overall percentage of DirecTV's customer base.) I can't imagine how many phone calls each day (though I'm sure you'll say it's almost none) DirecTV takes each day from people who want to cancel and find they can't without a large cash penalty.
dont forget if you UPGRADE by adding another reciever. i dont mean upgrade your old system to new bc that is free.. but if you wanted to added another reciever in your bedroom or a newly built den.. and you upgrade to add another box, youre automatically extending your contract.
Its really confusing because I had one of the two HD DVRs replaced during my time with D* (because one of them developed an annoying hum and D* wouldnt let me open the case to blow it out) and I know that replacement came about one year from when I quit. I asked several times and each time they said there would be no charges for terminating. I even asked online from 3 different CSR's to get it in writing in emails. And to my surprise there was NONE. But then there are people that get absolutely SCREWED over on this? It makes NO SENSE. its inconsistent and appears that CSR's are raking people over the coals at their discretion.See if they did do what they asked then I like to point out to people like susanandmark and hemi that unlike what they want to believe we do no intentionally screw over customers.

I don't think it's always at their discretion, but their ineptitude. There are occasions where a dishonest csr intentionally enters wrong info, but it is rare, I think. It did happen to me with the free Showtime 3 month anniversary gift.
Is that a one or two year extension? Also, I've read the terms about maintaining a certain program package. What if I'm 13 months in and I decide I want to either upgrade or downgrade my package (while maintaining the minimum requirement originally agreed to) does this also renew your contract?
well i went to swap out a D-11 reciever in my house last year, i was auto extended to 2 years...
the DTV switched my programming off. (channel not purchase even on locals) and i called and no it wasnt for late payment) and i said whats going on? i lost my programming. and i said i want it back on... they went on and on and said hold pls... then they said this...
Sir i cant find your programming. i can however set you up with our new programming. i said no. i want my programming. she said she cant get that and doesnt know. I told her. Choice Extra was my programming.
she goes i cant just give it back to you.. i have to set you up on our hew Choice Extra programming. i said why? she wouldnt and couldnt give me an answer bc my programming was 20.00 cheaper and now they hiked that up...
and my contract from 2007 was extended to 2009 was when i got my D-11 swapped. then when my "channel not purchased" drama came THEN i get a bill saying im extended to 2011. it happened and i dont lik it but now im IN House i dont pay a dime. however, if i quit or get fired... im sure i will be into a new 2 year contract.. again.
HORSE sh*t!

This is clearly a case where a csr screwed up badly. With 16 million customers, mistakes are bound to happen. Have you tried emailing Ellen Filipiak at eafilipiak@directv.com? Her office is very good at solving these kinds of problems.
