No reason to assume the box or card was hacked. I got hit twice on Superbowl weekend this year and once before that, Dish was always helpful in getting it back up once you got past the 30 minute wait to talk to a living person - there was no message to call anyone, all the channels but 3 or 4 just disappeared. The 301 I got was new in the box from Radio Shack and has never been out of the living room.
I used to never turn it off, and Dish advised me to turn it off every night to get updates. Since I started doing that (well, most nights anyway), I haven't had any problem.
