SEC vs. Big 12- Let's debate

This summer, the ACC/Big East debate burned up this site, and it turned out to be a somewhat laughable argument, for both teams are flawed in a legit team and have had some bad losses.

First, I'll admit- SamCDBS, the Big East IS not that good after all. You win.

Let's have a debate between the big boys: SEC vs. Big 12.

You all know I am this site's driver of the Texas Tech bandwagon (all the way to Glendale, I hope!), and there are other fans who support both conferences (mccoy, jwfgeol, BlackHitachi, etc.).

I insist the Big 12 is a bit better, especially on offense.

Exhibit A- Auburn. You know by now how I feel about them. Texas Tech could pitch a shutout against them! (AP voters had the gall to rank them, at one poinr AHEAD of the Longhorns and Red Raiders! One team is ranked #1, the other can't get out of their own backyard)

Here's an interesting fact: Vanderbilt had 107 total yards of offense on Saturday- Texas Tech RAN for 137 yards!

Think about that. A school that supposedly disdains the run had more yards on the ground than the #13 team had in TOTAL YARDS! And people think Tech's ranked too high?

SEC and Big 12, IMO, are the two top conferences in the country. The Pac-10 is USC and the Nine Dwarves, the Big 10 has some boo-boos to patch up.

This isn't a 'Who's better?'- let's make this interesting, have some fun, and give our thoughts on why we think each conference is superior in its own right.

Bill said that the ACC/Big East debates were like "saying Rosie O'Donnell is better looking than Roseanne Barr."

I guess the Big 12 vs. the SEC is like saying if Megan Fox is better looking than Hayden Panetierre.

If you want to continue the female analogy, I would not kick either the Big 12 or the SEC out of bed. Both are great conferences, and the tops are pretty close.

Both of the "other" undefeateds in the Big 12 South are pretty much cupcake fat (Eastern Washington, Nevada, UMass, Missouri State, Troy State, etc) but both will come in at a respectable 2 or 3 losses anyway.

However, top to bottom, the SEC is better. And, over the long haul, the SEC will be far better over any five or 10 year period than any other conference.

Auburn stinks this year and Vanderbilt is an overrated fluke. But Alabama, LSU, Florida, and Georgia would all put a whoopin on any team from the Big 12 on any day of the week.

The SEC is the current king of college football and it's going to take a lot more than an off year by Auburn and an overrated Vanderbilt squad to dethrone it. Since the inception of the BCS, the SEC has 4 championships, the Big 12 has 2, and four other conferences each have 1. The SEC also had the most bowl wins last season and a national championship team two years in a row.

All time, the SEC has the most national championships and the most bowl wins and the highest bowl win percentage. The Big 12 is 7th all time in wins and 6th in winning percentage.

This season is not over and a lot could happen. The Big 12 is currently the second best conference, but the SEC is currently the best and the all time best, and I'm sure by the time this season is over, the SEC will add to it's records. The only thing that could stop the SEC from winning another national championship this year is itself.

Yeah, Michigan has done a good job of keeping the SEC vs Big 10 rivalry in check. The SEC leads the all time series against the Big 10, and without Michigan, the SEC would have a completely overwhelming record against the Big 10. Michigan is the only Big 10 team that seems to have the SEC figured out year after year.

I've only seen a few SEC games, and I did see TEXAS/ OKLA, and I think the latter 2 could play with anyone in the nation. It will be interesting to find out just how good Penn St. really is, also. Add in USC (their loss was their annual "lose to an incredible underdog"), and this will be another interesting BCS season. We really need a playoff system.

I noticed it. I am trying to be a nice, if not nicer, guy. Its serves no point for you and me to argue about a post from a year ago on a now dead board. What's the incentive? Conference schedules are a mutual beat-down fest, so why add anymore potential losses? Besides the small schools need the payday they get when playing the regional powerhouses.

Also adding in the overlap in the SEC and ACC territories, that have teams scheduling in-state rivals from the other conference. That alone takes 1 game away from the OOC games.

The SEC is a great football conference. This year the Big 12 is scary. They have at least 7 of the top 10 quarterbacks in the country. When a 3 touchdown lead isn't safe at halftime, life becomes a bit weird. There are at least 10 teams in the Big 12 that, when healthy, can hang 50 in a game. If playing a Big 12 team, most SEC teams would be better served starting their basketball teams.

2 Great Conferences this season.

Texas,Oklahoma from the Big 12

Alabama,Georgia and Florida from the SEC are all legitimate contenders for the MNC.


Need to see a little more of Okie State. They are good and could be a notch better, hard to say at this point.

Sorry Sabres but I've seen plenty of Texas Tech, they are a fraud of the highest degree.

They deserve their current ranking because that is how the polls work, but as for lining up on a weekly basis and playing top notch football against a quality team there are 15-20 reams much better equipped to handle that task with better results than the carpetbaggers from Lubbock.
