It would be great if the search engines error logs showed something... anything.

You may need to adjust the verbosity of the logging (often known as "log level"). Elastic Search offers seven levels of logging if you're using log4j.

Sounds like a job for “cron”, Fire off at 08:00 and kill the Search daemon…
