Dr. Who In HD?

I can't confirm or deny if it is in HD or not. It is shot in widescreen. I have emailed the BBC and asked if it is in HD? The BBC does have an HD channel. So far there has not been a listing of the DR on that channel put that is no confirmation.

BBC HD is still in "trial basis", broadcasting 2-5 hrs. of programming per day, and most of it is up-res'd SD. Dr Who is shot on film and mastered on SD video. Season 4 reportedly will be mastered in HD (but still shot on film). Re Babylon 5, never was and never will be HD.

Who knows what Babylon 5 would be like until someone tried assuming there was alot of money and originals were still in good condition. CGI resolution was only TV quality to begin with so it wouldnt look all that great in HD anyways. I suppose it could go the remastered Star Trek route. Older material in general can only go so far. Otherwise one day we could see "I Love Lucy - HD".

Star Trek was shot on film and panned and scanned for tv. The remastering starts with a fresh HD cut from the original film, then they punch up the effects to make it nicer for young audiences.

Other shows were made this way so we very well could see some old tv in HD!

Babylon 5 from my understanding was shot in HD from the start.

Babylon 5 was an SD show, and all of the effects were done at D1 720x486. I was an artist at Foundation Imaging (R.I.P. :river ) for a few years

If they start SciFiHD then what will be left to watch on UHD? I watch SciFi on that channel, and it is the same company.

while an NBC Universal spokesperson confirmed the company will launch a "suite of HD networks."

They don't get in any more details then that. I also remember another article about a week later (but I can't find it) that stated they would have Chiller HD, Slueth HD, relauch of Bravo HD, USA HD and Scifi HD. Universal HD would be rebranded as a movie channel. "Fall" for a timeframe. Which should be around when D*'s capacity comes online.

Disney also recently annoucned a few channels going HD but they won't be launched until early 2008 but will be up on D* when launched and Time Warner just announced they would carry them as well (this may be old news for you guys, sorry).

You probably will. The older stuff that was edited on film is the most cost-effective to turn into HD Have you checked out Hogan's Heroes? It looks like the day it aired...but better. Old master negatives can be restored. Shows that were edited on video-tape (from the mid- 80's on) are much more expensive to re-produce.

And the move to bring SciFi to HD or not may be related to the fact that UHD has ramped up their sci-fi offerings dramatically. AND indeed, BSG is looking mighty sweet in HD these days now that its gone to Mpeg-4.

I will believe SciFi HD exists the day it comes on. I don't take DirecTV's grand plan (none of which has materialized yet) very seriously.

UHD doesn't show the newest episodes, I would love to have both!!

Not anymore. They are showing BSG Season 3; almost half-way through it.

So, I watch it originally in SD on SciFi (because I am too impatient to wait), then watch it again, and soak it all in in HD. I'll be watching BSG through June.

Did I see that right when the season ender for BSG said season 4 would be in 2008? Perhaps its that far ahead to wait for SciFi HD. Nah.

I keep bookmarks for new episodes of TV shows from TV.com. They usually list the first episode of the new season a few weeks before. They also show news articles telling about the new season even sooner. Here is the one for BSG.

But we can't criticize Dish Network for not carrying a channel that does not exist.
