Saving programs to new receiver

I am getting a new HD TV and receiver and was wondering if there is a way to download the programs that my wife has saved to the new receiver through usb cable or whatever way? In addition to our weekly shows she has several Christmas related movies she has saved and she wants to be able to watch them at a future date.

Move them to an external hard drive.

What is the current receiver? If it is an SD DVR, you cannot move programs. Real time recording to DVD is about your only option.
