I have a Mercury II receiver pointing to satmex5 116.8 using a 80cm dish with a universal LNB. no motor.

I am locked on to 12175 H 3935 with 68% signal strength.

There are 2 BYU channels one international (spanish audio dub) and one BYU english.
Only getting one BYU international on 12175 H 3935
Can't find 12165 H 3935. no quality, no strength.

I used a birdog to align the dish.

My question is........ Is 12165 H 3935 out or sometimes on and sometimes off?........

On lyngsat is shows one of the the BYU channels on 12165 H 3935
the other on 12175 H 3295

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks!

At the time of my poster it was off...........when I woke up this morning it was still off...............

0 quality - 0 strength on 12165 H 3935 Every other one is at 50 - 60%...............

I think something else is wrong......... Lyngsat shows BYU english on 12165 H 3935.

FWIW, I've previously had conversations with KaLee, Carissa, and Nicole at BYUTV concerning their satellite transmission choices - specifically the choice to abandon the traditional BYUTV programming on SatMex5 without considering the depth of impact it would have on their viewers. I suggested modifying their contract with Dish to allow their channel to be broadcast unencrypted, such as NASA and Angel1 on dish. It was indicated that they would see what they could do to have this done the next time their contract was up for renewal. I'm hoping that comes soon, as that would open up a nice powerful transmission of their channel for tons of people to gain access to.

So what you are saying is that it is not possible to view this channel on satmex5?

You can view the international channel on satmex5, but it's not the "real" BYUTV. There may be English programming on the international channel, but it's not the same feed that gets sent to dish/directv/etc. The last time I watched, they still did broadcast conference sessions on SatMex5, but the daily programming was the international programming, and not the traditional BYUTV programming.

I have not scanned satmex5 for awhile to see if there is anything else out there, but I'm betting that they aren't putting any non-international stuff for BYUTV on there any longer. If they did choose to do so, I'd think that one of those contacts would have shot me a note to let me know, as they have been pretty good about keeping communication open regarding their transmissions/etc with me so far.

Thank you. So I guess the only real option would be to subscribe to dish networks basic package to receive the BYU programmings. Any experience with the DN package?

I've had dish and direct before.. nothing amazing about the packages, but I hate thinking about subscribing to either for a min of 2 years just to get one channel. That's why I ended up setting up a BUD again to get BYUTV.

The quality is probably as good as you're going to get - it's not like they have BYUTV in high def. If you have your own equipment, you used to be able to subscribe to the public interest channels on dish for something like $10-15 per month, and that was enough to get you BYUTV. I had to call a couple times in order to get someone who understood that this was possible though.

The only other issue I'd be wary of when subbing for 2 years, is that dish and directv had not always carried byutv. One of them had an exclusive contract, and the other was not allowed to carry it (can't remember which one now), hopefully they don't go back that direction, or you might end up with a 2 year contract and no BYUTV :(

Thank you very much for all of your advice. You saved me a lot of time and money.
Although I will not get a BUD due to my limited space and HOA restrictions, I will infact be keeping an eye on the BYU website for any updates to how they might get the channels to a larger audience.

Thanks again!

if you have your own equipment through Dish, all you need to do is sub to SOMETHING..heck get an alacarte channel for like 2 bucks (Outdoor Network). They charge a 6.00 fee for not having thre basica package but then you can add the free (yes I said FREE) PI Pack that includes BYU TV

edit to add more info :)

As I noted, just get one channel from the alacart list like Outdoor channel, RFDTV or even a Superstation. The "no basic package" fee is now 6 bucks
A La Carte Programming

then add the FREE Public Interest Pack
Free Public Interest Programming Package

for a while I had just locals and the PI pack
