Good evening everyone,
This is my first post here on satelliteguys. I never knew there was so much information. Would you mind giving me advise on a couple of satellite quesitons?

I'm hoping to get Globecast because they have a paid channel I want to receive. I only wish they had some Japanese channels as well.

1. Does anyone know of how to pick up Japanese channels on Globecast?

2. If I do go with Globecast, what do you recommend I get for a dish and receiver combo and a smart card? Should I use theirs or just buy my own? Btw, I don't know anything about these topics so layman's terms may suite me better if possible. If you were getting a satellite to get those channels what dish/receiver and smart card would you buy? And where should I buy them?

Also, please be as specific as possible only cause I won't know what to get otherwise, ie dish size, model numbers, etc. Anything else I need besides those 3 items?

3. Will I be able to record from Globecast? What equipment shall I buy for that?

I hope my questions make sense. Thank You all for your assistance. I greatly appreciate your time.

Thank you for your reply Hemi,

I've found these so far looking at different forums:
Dish: Winegard
Receiver: Pansat 3500 or coolsat 5000/6000
Smart Card: ? Do the receivers come with smart cards?

1. All I really want is a Globecast subscription because they have a paid channel I want but if I'm going to get a dish anyway should I get my own like the ones above or use theirs?

2. Advantages or disadvantages to getting the 3 party dishes/receivers/cards?

3. How do I record shows? Do the receivers do that or do I get other equipment?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank You

There aren't many Japanese channels on free to air. TVJapan and NHK are both on C-Band so you would need a 6 foot or larger dish

The issue with Globecast is if you want to subscribe, you have one option. Their receiver and smart card. Globecast won't authorize any other box for use on their subscription service. You can use a 36" dish which can be purchased at SatelliteAv or Sadoun (both sponsors at the top) but for the receiver, you're kinda sol with getting a different box

3. Will I be able to record from Globecast? What equipment shall I buy for that?
you can use really any recording device to do that. vcr, dvd recorder, stand alone hard drive

most receivers dont have a smart card slot because other than Globecast and one other provider, they're not needed.

if all you want is a subscription service through Globecast, as noted above, you have to use their box. You could always add a different receiver to get the other channels (the ones that are unencrypted) but for the sub you need the Globecast box.
2. Advantages or disadvantages to getting the 3 party dishes/receivers/cards?
see above...You can use any dish but most of the time its easier to get the whole system as one because then there is only one shipping amount.

Which Japanese channels are you looking for on GlobeCast ? I made a cursory look on Galaxy 25 listing on Lyngsat, and I can't find a single Japanese language channel on the bird. There are some Korean, Malaysian, and chinese channels, but I find no Japanese. Galaxy 25 may not be the place for you.

[edit] Don't even find Japanese channels on the DISH International bird ( Anik F3) . Very slim pickings, I'd say. Perhaps some web-based TV service offers the channel you are looking for.

:(

Thank you brentb636 & Iceberg, I greatly appreciate your time to answer my questions.

1. I guess I don't a choice for receivers. Is it worth it to buy an additional receiver down the line? What are the "unencrypted" channels I would get that I don't get with globecast?

2. If it is worth it to get a different receiver does the Winegard dish make a big difference compared to the dish sent by Globecast?

3. Btw, does Globecast have a contract over certain world channels? I wish I wasn't forced to use their equipment.

Thank You again.

on the satellite that Globecast has their channels? none...
But the Globecast box might be "fixed" that satellite whereas the others can get all the satellites up there.
Also I've heard that the Globecast box is not the best box out there. It is very limited on features.

2. If it is worth it to get a different receiver does the Winegard dish make a big difference compared to the dish sent by Globecast?
The Globecast Dish is made by ChannelMaster and works really good. The only drawback is it has a bigger mast (2" vs. 1 5/8" for most masts)

3. Btw, does Globecast have a contract over certain world channels? I wish I wasn't forced to use their equipment.
yep. They have an agreement with alot of channels and you have to use their box

by the way...what channel (s) were you looking to subscribe to?

It's one called Eri TV. On lyngsat they had Globecast's icon next to it so i'm assuming they are the only ones to air that channel.

These are the satellites it's on according to Lynsat:
Intelsat 8
Arabsat 2B
Badr 3
Galaxy 25

Thank you Iceberg

yep looks like its encrypted so you would need the Globecast box

here is their website
