I want to get DirecTv installed but I have a question on the satellite installation.

Can I get a slim-line 5 LNB dish installed on the east side of my house? I realize the dish has to face south. My cable box is on the outside of the house but on the south wall. I realize it only feeds 1 coax back to the coax hub that I have inside the house which is located in the north east corner of my house. So I want to avoid installation on the south wall unless, the cables can be run 60 feet down and along the east wall. But I'm thinking installing the dish directly on the east wall will reduce cable runs. Or will the tech insist on install it on the roof instead? I don't want that.

I don't want to place an order for DirecTv if I can't get this done by the tech. Last thing I want is to get into an disagreement wtih the tech and not get what I want. The last time a Dish tech came and wanted to install a receiver in the garage. I thought he was nuts.

Can the cables be installed such that they are close to the floor (the room is on the second floor)?

Also, I realize there are two cables coming in, but my coax hub only has one cable input. Is there some kind of device that will auto select the incoming signal from one of the two cables and send it as input into my coax hub?

Confusing questions to a newbie, but is there a pro out there that could answer these questions so that I could feel comfortable with my decisions before I place my DirecTv subscription?

Thanks for any help!

Nate,
:welcome to the site !!!

If you have a southern view from where you want the dish placed, it should not be a problem, I would tell D* that you want a pole mount situation and don't want your dish on the roof. That should be no problem.

IF the tech gets there , let him survey the situation and then give him your ideas and reasoning and go from there. If he doesn't want to do it your way, send him on his way, he might come up with a better idea that you had not thought of yet.

Do you have a basement ? If so, maybe he can go thru the basement then thru a closet or garage or something to get to your desired room. Are you only putting the D* service in one room ?
I would run 4 cables from the dish to your cable box or at least a good location on the house, for a potential multiswitch and then go from there. It all depends what your situation is and without actually seeing it, I can not give you an exact answer.

Mounting on the east side of the house MAY be an option, depending upon how far to the west you live. If you live in the eastern part of the country, mounting on that side isn't normally a viable option since the dish would point more to the southwest.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Unfortunately, I don't have a basement. The installation will be on outside of the house probably on the 2nd floor level against a stucco wall. I should be able to get a southern view. The adjacent house to the east is about 12 feet away. Though if it was mounted on the east wall, the west might be obstructed. I'm in California.

Would the DirecTV guys charge extra to string the cable 60 feet if they did have to install on the southern wall?

By the way, I had my connection to my coax hub confused. It's been a while since I thought about my "ideal" setup. The incoming cables would plug into a HD receiver and a single coax line output would fix nicely into my coax hub. So that's ok.

I guess my confusion is with a pole mount (J mount mast). Can a dish be installed to it and be twisted around so it faces south? Usually the dishes are facing perpendicur to the pole mount.

Stucco is not a good mounting surface. This is a fairly big dish that catches a lot of wind. I would recommend a pole mount or and under eave mount if possible. DTV will usually carry the pole mounts but not very often will they have other options. You may want to look online for under eave mounts and order one for the AU9S so that you can have what is most compatible with your house.
