Unbelievably my wife gave me the go ahead to replace her 22 year old Mitsubishi (no sound, picture started failing- you could not watch black&white on it anymore) with a HDTV.

We looked at the new Toshiba Regaza 40" 120 hz, the Samung 120 hz and the Sony XBR4 120 hz. She like both the Samsung and the Sony. This was Thursday and I resisted buying one till Friday when the sales started for SuperBowl Sunday.

While mucking around getting reviews I searched BestBuy's site and found out the new Samsung LNT-4081F was on sale for $2219!! WOW, this was the new LED backlite unit that came out in November for $3199 and now it was down to $2799 and they had it on sale for a rediculous $580 off and 3 years same as cash!! I read enough to know that I wanted one.

Well, first this HDTV is beautiful! it has no buttons but is like the PS3 in that it has finger touch controls. You can turn it on and off by touching the blue ring on the base and my wife giggles everytime she does this. She really likes the look of the HDTV.

But the proof is in the picture and there is one thing I have to say -- I HAVE NEVER seen a picture on any HDTV that has the depth that this set does. We were watching Equator on E* and the program was Eye over Arizona. They flew over a crater and it looked like I could reach down in the crater! The visuals were unbelievably 3-D more so then any I have seen to date. The colour was spot on the PQ was sharp. I did leave it on the Dynamic mode but I turned the Contrast down to 65 and set the Brightness to 50. I also turned the set to movie mode and the Sharpness way down. I set the backlight at level 6 and might move it lower is this set is bright!

Stories are true, we were watching a movie on HDNET latter and when the screen went dark the HDTV disappeared. I can't say enough about this set and when I hook it up to my Dish211 with a HDMI cable I will come back and let you know how well the speakers work. Right now I have a Subwoofer with to planer satellites hooked up and they sound pretty good.

There is one caveout -- sometimes on extreemly fast moving objects that are moving horizontally you sometimes will get a ghost. This happened twice. These objects have to be moving exceptionally fast and this might be a result of some bluring in the film but it does not happen with fast moving objects that are verticle. I have yet to hook up my PS3 and play a BD but that will happen next weekend. I am pulling for the Giants.

Anyway, this is a great tv, best black I have seen yet, and of course the finale word is from my wife, "This makes me want to watch channels that I nevered watched before." I think Equator has just become one of her favorites. :D

Congrats on your new hdtv!!!!

I have the Sammy 4065. I love this tv. To me the pic is as good as my palsma. From what I have read the 81 is one of the top hdtv out there today.

The latest Sound & Vision compares the 52" version of this Samsung LED-based LCD (MSRP $4500) with the 50" Pioneer Plasma (MSRP $6000).

The Pioneer wins but according to reviewers the Samsung is the best the LCD as technology is capable of...

Diogen.

I say the $2200 I paid for the 40" is a steal and since I primarily watch it from bed I am not more than 6 feet away. Looks GOOD!

Okay, I finally hooked up the PS3 to the Samsung and the picture - - well -- the picture almost makes me cry. The damm thing is near perfect. I watched parts of two movies along with a little Heavenly Sword thrown in for good measure.

The picture is 3-D looking. I have never seen 1080p reproduced so vividly with objects so dimensional looking. The two movies I watched in BD were Bram Stroker's Dracula and Ratatouie. I watched these around 1PM so there was plenty of light in the room and Dracula was still very hot looking. I am still amazed by how well the Samsung LNT-4081 handles dark pictures and how the colours seem to be so bright.

As for Ratatouie, I thought my Pioneer Elite 630HD was doing a great job until I purchased the Samsung. Ratatouie on the Samsung just puts my Pioneer to shame. Once again, the Samsung really pushes the 3-D look of the movie and it looks as though the characters in the movie have real dimension to their bodies. I just can't say enough about how well the Samsung performs.

As for Heavenly Sword, there is a lot of defiinition in the picture that the Samsung shows that is missing from the Pioneer. As the Samsung is a true 1920x1080p screen my poor Pioneer which is a 1080i with a line resolution of 1200 just doesn't meet the video performance of the Samsung.

But there is a one little problem that I am trying to figure out. I am not hearing all the sound channels thru the Samsung. I read that the SRS is supposed to resolve 5.1 into the speakers of the Samsung but that is not happening. I am not hearing all of the front channels thru the tv's speakers. The Samsung has two side speakers and a rear woofer. For tv speakers they sound pretty good but I could not figure out how to get all the channels playing thru the tv from the PS3. Maybe one of you has an idea?
