How does a country that averages 120+ degrees during the summer get to host a World Cup...oh yeah...oil money....

Supposedly they will build 10 open-air stadiums with FORCED A/C to both the players and fans.

I wonder if the female reporters will be required to wear Burqas? Or will they have caught up to the rest of civilization by than?

WOW! Qatar?! What a shocker! I thought for sure the US would get 2022. Good thing there was no vote buying going on!!

Russia does not surprise me. But there aren't even enough big cities in Qatar to put all the stadiums. I guess they'll build a big bubble over the country to keep it A/C'd.

Funny and a good question.

Russia was favorites to win 2018. But Qatar, is smaller than almost every state in the US....is a huge shocker...

Qatar is a very secular country. I have a Brazilian friend who lives there and is perfectly happy and says that she can wear and do anything that she wants. I don't know what they could do about the heat in an open-air stadium though. I have read that they are going to use solar-powered A/C. With all of their oil money and desire to show off to the rest of the world, maybe some impressive science will come from this?

Anything that keeps this foreign game in a foreign country, especially one that is 11 time zones different, is fine with me.

What is wrong with the game here?

The ESPN hype machine tries to gin up interest in the "sport of the next generation" (by then four generations and counting) with massive over-coverage, squeezing out important coverage of popular sports. By holding this foreign event in foreign places, especially ones many time zones away, those summers can be much more like other summers in terms of sports.

I've heard that Russia won 2018 WC Bid, and Qatar 2022 WC Bid. Also you forgot, Russia will be the host country of the 2014 Winter Olympics. And did you know that the US boycotted the Summer Olympics in Moscow in 1980?

Such as???? I'd like you to prove that statement.

Simple math. Every second devoted to soccer is a second NOT devoted to something else. And, since pretty much EVERYTHING else is more popular, there you go.
