Rumors from Team Summit

Two questions:

1. If they start stacking several satellites at each location, can a single dish pointed at that location, say 110, receive all satelllites stationed at that location?

they're doing it right now :)

110 has Echostar 6 & Echostar 8
148 has Echostar 1 & Echostar 2

ExpressVu (Canadian DTH provider) does it ont heir main satellite
91 has Nimiq & Nimiq 3

They are not at the same location in space, but when it comes down to your dish, its close enought to work :)

2. If they offered a broadband service, and you got a transmitter dish, would it be able to receive TV content, or would it be for broadband only. If the transfer rates were decent and the latency livable, I would definately be interested in giving it a try to finally cut the cord from my local phone/cable company. (especially if the $$$ figures that Stargazer mentioned came true :yes ) Any guesses what kind of transfer rates (and reliability) could be achieved?

As for this one, DirecPC use to do it
KU LNB at 99
DBS LNB at 101

so it is possible...the only thing with that one is what happens if you needed 110 or 119...2nd dish needed :)

my husband is there at the convention; try to keep me informed here at home before he gets the news there if you can. I just had major surgery and couldn't go.

StarBand dishes is also able to recieve tv programming and broadband internet through the same dish with the lnbf kit and if the dish has a skew.

Also WildBlue has been saying that with their dish you can get internet and either Directv or DISH programming with just the one dish.

No, you'll just hear about them first as a Pub member. It's a nice little benefit Scott provides to those who help support the site.
Other benefits include dancing naked women and free beer. Of course the women only get naked when the beer flows and they haven't found a way to transmit beer electronically...but most of us are patiently waiting on new technology to finally make this a reality.

Seriuosly though, it's only a minimum of $5 to become a supporter.

105 can't be national HD there is a footprint in the country where 105 signal is too low, i am talking in the 25-30 range up here, so no that won't happen

Just an update.

It appears that Dish Network will be launching a Broadband service from 105 in association with SES Americom.

The Dish's are 66CM and 90CM Dishs and operate on KA/FSS spectrum.

Lets see, HD rumor could be:

1. New channel(s) asap. This could include maxHD, starzHD, yesHD. I rate this option as doubtful.

2. Announcement of mpeg-4 hd channels "coming soon". Possibly showcasing a mpeg4 receiver. I rate this option as possible.

Frankly, theres not much they could announce that would make me excited. I am biding my time until sept-nov to decide whether to jump to comcast (all locals + main movie packs + inHD in hd). I am waiting for the "free upgrade to mp4 receiver for existing hd customers" announcement :)

Why will it work this time? Wasn't DirectWay abandon because it proved that the upload speed was slower than the download speed (among other things)? What advantages will make this for those who get broadband from Cable?

The speeds depend on how much transponder space they are willing to use and the error correction being used. However, the one thing satellite will NEVER overcome is the delay in sending those data bits all the way up to the sat and all the way back down. This isnt a problem with web surfing/email, but online gaming and possibly VoIP has issues with the 200+ms delay.

AMC-15 should solve the footprint issues at 105. The new satellite is capable of broadcasting at much higher power than the current one.

2. If they offered a broadband service..... *edit* If the transfer rates were decent and the latency livable, I would definately be interested in giving it a try.*edit*

Theres no such thing as livable latency and satellite internet in the same sentence in my book.

I've had DirecPC ($79 a month plus $400 for dish/modem)before and it was horrible. YOu can't expect a query to travel through your home ground transmitters to 22,500 mile repeaters in space back to main ground reciever connected to the internet backbone, find what you want and back through from the ground station back to your dish/computer and not expect lag. Heavy rain and snow made internet access stand still just like satellite TV.

IMHO, the only place it would be good for is rural areas that could not get cable/DSL/dial-up internet period.

It was true that I was set up for 768k down from the bird which was good for large file transfers in the middle of the night, it actually made regular surfing, online game play, ebay sniping, just above the bearable borderline. BUt I had no choice.

Maybe as a mobile internet solution for RV's or people living out in the middle of the prarie in Montana or Wyoming.... Otherwise I say :no no-way :no from personal experience. It should be a last resort unless they have found a way to speed up the process.

Anyway.. back to our regular rumor news......

It might be cheaper, but with wireless catching on in many places, sat broadband will only apply to the most rural areas

Not even in some rural areas. I live in a rural area and we are scheduled to have wireless Internet access by late fall.

DirecWay is still in use, my brother has it. Satellite internet is obviously not competing with cable or DSL, it's to provide service to those who can't even get cable or DSL

"Not even in some rural areas. I live in a rural area and we are scheduled to have wireless Internet access by late fall."

Rural Oregon is orders of magnitude more advanced than rural Texas and Oklahoma.

They may be exploiting their partnership with SBC or some similar arrangement.

I've seen posted elsewhere links to the 2wire site that shows the technology that SBC is funding that combines DSL broadband and satellite in one box. Good for Video-on-Demand and other interactive applications, i.e. downloading misc. content to the DVR in the background, web surfing, etc. This system is SBC's own branded box, as is it's DVR (they don't sell the 942/etc), so it only makes sense that Dish would have its own, too. Looks like some pretty cool ideas at play...

Hey Guys,

Just got calls from two more of our reporters at the show, they just arrived.

Team Summit Official Starts tonight at 6:45PM Nashville Time.

We hope to be getting calls and blackberry messages from the Opening Ceremonies. The majority of the big news will be tommorow.

I am told the Hotel at the Team Summit is beautyful, but not as nice as the Gaylord Hotel which hosted last years Summit. Someone sent us a photo from the hotel.

More information as we have it. :D
