Rumor Alert -- Funai is doing Blu-Ray!

Good. BD needs a low cost stand alone player. Hopefully they will meet all specs. Should be interesting with two low cost producers of CE equipment (Funai and Fuh yuan). Just have to wait and see how it all pans out towards the end of the year and the holiday season.

Hmmmm. But no date set. If it's cheap enough, I'd buy one even if it just played the movie and didn't comply with the Oct standards and didn't have internet capability. Then I'd use it and later buy a top notch player with all the bells and whistles. The Funai would then move to a secondary location and the new boy on the block would have the living room.

But, I've been sucked in before. This story might be absolutely true. With a 2009 intro date.

Maybe by the end of 2007. One link I found earlier said they don't have a partner yet. This link says end of 2007 and $500

It the initial price is $500 for a low end player then I think the Blu-ray group is going to be in some trouble. They need to be able to compete with the Toshiba $299 current offering. Granted that the price will be back to $399 in a month, but by the end of the year they could do a price drop on the current players.

Yeah, I don't think $500 is going to do it. I wouldn't pay $500 for a rebadged Funai when I could get a PS3 60GB for $600- and I am no fan of Sony.

BD needs this badly. FYI the HD-A2 is currently sold out at amazon and is the #1 selling DVD player and the #2 selling piece of electronics that they have. Outselling the ipod and is 2nd to a cheap 25 dollar web cam. The price is really becoming critical.

Blu Ray-Over 1 million sold

Sony to lay off game worker in the US.
