Doing some driving today for easter to see family and we stopped for a short 30 minute break at a restaurant/truckstop/C-store place. Anyways, while everyone was stretching their legs, I saw a pawn shop across the road and I ventured over as I was surprised it was open.

I wandered arouind and saw a viewsat ultra box on the shelf . Box looked almost new and I opened it up (kind of to the dismay of the pawn shop owner, but I told him I was curious if it really was a viewsat in the box). Anyways, opened it up and sure enough, everyone on the package contents listing was in the box, PLUS a 512meg USB key. Figured why not ask what he was asking for it. To my surprise he told me $25 out the door if I paid cash (Gotta love how these places operate). I told him it wasn't worth more than $20 to me and that's what I'd offer on the condition that I get to at least power it up in the store to ensure it actually turned on. He didn't even think twice and took the deal and let me power it up and even let me hook it to the tv to see if the outputs worked. Btw, for those that have not seen an ultra, the remote is a MONSTER. It's bigger than my AVR remotes.

Anyways, everything was working as I would expect, immediately noticed (as I am sure many of you suspected) third part firmware on it. No biggie, just get the factory stuff when I get a chance.
I have a whole new motorized setup coming from sadoun thanks to the $1 auctions and some other goodies so now I'm gonna have a nice motorized setup and a motorized test setup to play with, now I even have a receiver to use for it. I'm kind of intrigued on recent reports that the newer viewsats and motors are playing well together plus I like the idea of having a nice testing setup so I don't mess with my nicely functioning setup I have now.

Btw, feel free to give me some suggestions in my other thread on a PVR receiver with blind scan that I want to try http://www.satelliteguys.us/showthread.php?t=94065

My, what a Christian thing to do! :)

This site is so much fun to read.
If it's not someone getting an 8, 10, or 12 foot C-band dish for free...
...it's someone getting a free Primestar... or a pallet-load of 'em!

The good deal on the SatPros receivers last month by SatelliteAV was outstanding,
...as are the current auction deals you noted from Sadoun.

I've never had any luck at pawn shops, but I have heard some pretty good stories.
Another place to look (but not near me!) is the Thrift Shop sort of place.
Someone found a new-in-the-box Phase III dish (with LNBs) a couple of years ago.
They thought I would like it, and got it for about $8.

I once intercepted a guy at a stop light, who was carrying a truck full of stuff to the dump.
I inquired quickly if he was taking the dishes to a new house, and he asked if I'd like them.
After the light, we both pulled over, and I got a DishPro 500 + 300 + DP34 switch, with all the nice cabling still attached.

I guess it pays to keep your eyes open.

Good deal satin, you'll like the Ultra, I've had one since last Nov. You're right about the remote too, I think there's a button on it to remote-start your car if you program it lol
Get the 1.19 pgm off viewsatusa. It won't do AC-3 though.

Turbosat, the bin won't do AC-3? or the receiver itself has a problem with AC-3? If it's the bin, do previous versions work ok AC-3 wise?

Also, do you have yours on a motor?

I just like to haggle with guys in places like this. I love the midwest ABC warehouses for the sheer fact that it's like a 3 ring circus of wheeling and dealing. Sometimes I get more fun out of working on prices then actually buying something and using it at home.

Satin I dont use mine to move a dish, since I have a sep 5' for ku its on a reg polar mount/motor. I need to get one though just to try it, since the past Viewsats dont have a good rep with motors.
The sound bug is something VS apparently isnt interested in fixing-I've been after their tech support since I got mine. They just keep saying all firmware upgrades come from Korea and it's supposed to be coming (right). I ended up using the 3rd party stuff just so I could have AC3 functioning. I doubt I'll buy another viewsat, even if it is a very nice rec, just for their lack of support for real FTA.

Heck yeah, you gotta love a bargain. I don't think the pawn shop dude had any idea what it was nor did he care.
Boy though, the original owner probably paid like $170 based on ebay prices, then probably got $10 for it at the pawn shop.
I'm pretty happy with the purchase, though I have yet to really do more than reflash it to v119 (through USB, that was pretty slick) and slave it to my pansat to make sure the tuners worked.
So far, everything appears normal, did some checking to make sure it wasn't some viewsat knock-off too and it appears to be the real deal. When the weather clears and I get my other equipment here hopefully I'll have it fully up and running on a secondary motoriezed setup.

Turbo, yeah, sad that the hackers can get it AC3 working. Hell just grab that code and put it in the factory stuff for pete's sake. Oh well. it'll be a few weeks until I get my second system setup since the weather sucks now and then I'm taking a little vacation.
