Report: 3.5 Million 3D Blu-ray Bought in First Year

American consumers bought 1.75 million 3D Blu-ray Discs at retail during the first year they were available and scored another 1.7 million as part of hardware bundling deals, according to data from IHS Screen Digest.

I have to believe these numbers are skewed due to the fact that a lot of Blu-Ray / DVD combo packs released by Disney included a "free" 3D disc (i.e. Tron, Tangled, etc). If they are counting these I can guarantee a majority were not purchased for the 3D benefit. (My parents bought all of them because of the disney coupons making it cheaper than the one disc alternative... I'm sure they weren't the only ones.)

This seems to support the idea that 3D penetration is fractional. By comparison, TiVo penetration is well over 1%.
