replacing old EHD w/ a Passport on 211K

Under the heading of "reviving antiquated hardware" I guess--

Looks like my old WD 640GB mybook died, can't even get power to it anymore.
Had a new-ish WD 2TB Passport lying about so subbed that in.

everything seems to be working as before, so WAF wise, I'm outta the doghouse.

I guess the passport "passes" in the power-supply sense even though not specifically listed anywhere I can find.

If anyone thinks this is a bad idea, I'd like to hear.

I tried it on a 722K just so see what would happen. It worked initially but soon started to not be recognised. formatted it back to a PC and used it for a long time after that.

Self powered EHDs are better and safer. Unpowered ones draw power from the USB port and may shorten the STB lifespan. I believe that is why Dish says to use self powered ones.

Of course, you can always run an unpowered EHD thru a powered USB hub. I do that.

Thanks all. just replaced the wall wart for the original EHD and it powers up, so I'll just swap it back in, and hopefully everything will get back to whatever passes for normal around here...

side note: third different electronic device that I've needed to replace the ps/battery/ wallwart in the last year. Coinkydink? I hope so.

Surge strip or UPS?

Surge strip. Not many power cuts around here. Three devices mentioned upthread are on different circuits; one my mobile, the other my wife's tablet.

Online of standby UPS.
If I'm not mistaken only the online always runs on batteries and really isolates power output from what's on the wall.
The Standby applies surge protection (like a surge strip) to wall power, then feeds it to your equipment and it only will switch onto battery backup power if there's a power failure.
The Online is more expensive than the standby.

So what is the UPS you are using?

I have a Line-Interactive (standby) UPS on my Hopper3 and it cuts in fast enough that the Hopper3 just continues playing with no issue. I only notice the power is out if some of the lights were on. It also cuts in when I get those line sags (brown outs) that can really cause problems with electrical power supplies.

Any particular model in maind? I only have the EHD, a 211k, a sony AVR & BD, and a harmony hub on this circuit, so not a lot of demanding devices.
