Replacing hard drive in 722 ( non K )

I've found threads on this topic before that the question was never answered, just pages of comments why the person didn't just replace the receiver. So from the start I'm not asking your opinion on why I don't replace the receiver, because I own the receiver, I've found an exact replacement new hard drive for $28.00, and if I swap the receiver I'll have to pay rent on the receiver and DVR option. So with that said, when replacing the HDD in a VIP722 (non K) receiver will it self format when installed, or is there anything I need to do before installation? Again the hard drive being installed is the exact brand, model # and storage capacity and the one that gave up the ship. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Good you found the exact drive, but the "rent and DVR option" you are already paying for...no matter if leased or owned.

The receiver will ask you to format the drive when you install it. Nothing more to do after that, except to set up new timers. Those are also kept on the drive.

The only real advantage of owned equipment vs leased equipment, is that you can activate and deactivate it at your whim. There is not really any other advantage, other than if you cancel you do not have to send it back and can sell it. If you replace an owned piece of equipment, they will ship you a refurbished model anyways, and you send the old one back. The replacement will still be owned. If you do not send back the old shot equipment, it will be charged against your account.
That said, you can replace the harddrive on your own if you would like, but it would be at your own risk. I haven't seen anyone report that they messed something up, but am almost positive if it does, you are SOL as your broke it open.

If I were replacing the drive, I would get a bigger capacity like 1TB or more. I used to crack open HR24's from DTV all the time and replace those 500GB with 2TB drives. I venture to bet that the 722 will work fine with a bigger 3.5" drive of any brand. That being said, unless your opposed to a 2 year commitment, I would think about asking for a Hopper upgrade or at least get a 722K.

I haven't looked into this for some time but last I knew even if you used one of the few 1TB that supposedly works, you're still limited to 500GB recording space.

I knew I would have to pay for it being a DVR receiver but I'm not paying rent on none of the rest of my receivers, just for the DVR option on another 722K that replaced this one I posted about. I'm not a big DVR Library person, I'll record shows or movies and watch them on the weekend then delete 90% of them, so I really don't need a bigger hard drive. I've also read where people have had issues of a bigger hard drive not formating or being recongnized. This would be my case. I appreciate everyones prompt reply.

Dish doesn't charge "rent" on any of their receivers. What they do charge, is by the active receiver/type. So whether you have 3 owned receivers or 3 leased receivers, your bill is exactly the same.

Don't mean to butt in on thread but have similar situation. The hard drive died in a 722K that I own and I purchased another 722K back in August 2014. Since I own it I would like to see if I can replace the HDD and get it working again. Does anyone know the particulars of the HDD in the 722K (make/model/capacity) to replace it with or a HDD that is known to work as a replacement?
Thanks, Gerry

these are acceptable replacements.

Thanks for the reply on drives! However it appears that a replacement 500GB drive (using the list) is pretty much impossible to find. The only one that I found
was the ST3500312CS for the most part. Others were less capacity and approached half the cost of just buying a 722K online..

I used that Seagate drive as well, found it for like 40 bucks shipped on Ebay.

That list is several years old and more drives may have been added, probably not though.

I would not put an SSD in a DVR, since it's constantly writing/rewriting and an SSD has a limited number of write/rewrite cycles.

No SSD would work in the first place. None approved.
