recording with 211 and external hard drive?

got a 211 with external hard drive.should i be able to watch a channel and record on another.it only lets me watch what's recording.do i need a splitter on the back or is that the way it's made

The 211 only has one tuner so no you can not record one thing and watch another

The 211 is a single tuner receiver so you cannot watch a different satellite channel from the one you are recording.
You can record an OTA channel and watch a satellite channel or record a satellite channel and watch OTA.

Or record a sat and an ota channel and watch something previously recorded

Sounds like if you want more independent viewing from what's recording, you should move to at least a 612, dual tuner.

Or use two 211 receivers so you eliminate the DVR fee, but you would still have the second receiver fee.

I think the 2nd receiver is 7 bux right now and a dvr is 10 a month.

Using a 211 as a DVR has no monthly fee but has a one time $40 account level fee.

Dvr fee is only $10 for a 922, $12 for hopper, $7 for all other receivers.
