Apartment I just moved into supplies the DirecTv with the D12-100 receiver, no DVR. I'm new to DirecTv and thought I could just hook up my Panny vcr/dvdr that I was using with the cable I had previously but it doesn't seem to work to record DirecTv. Called for help and DirecTv says I need to buy one of their dvr's for like $150 plus monthly fees. Is this true? Must I have a DirecTv branded device to record? Just looking for the cheapest way to record at a set time and channel while I'm away from home. Thanks for any help.

I'm not aware of anything in the SD receivers that would block a VCR or DVR recorder. What channel were you trying to record? How did you hook it up? Best hookup would likely be the Yellow/Red/White RCA cables.

Is the account set up through Directv directly or a 3rd party vendor like Access Media 3? Where I live in Minnesota our apartment complex has Access Media 3. They give us Choice programming package for free and we pay any extras (HD, DVR etc)
to Satelliteguys dcrets!You can't use the cable dvr to record and decode the Directv signal, but if there are inputs on the dvdr that match the outputs on the D12, you could record that way.
It is provided by a 3rd party. MDU. They are certainly willing to sell me anything I want. I have tried connecting using the RCA cables but still doesn't work. I guess the Panny does not have a tuner that is compatible with DirecTv so cannot receive the channels. I'll try some other things using the RCA cables when I get home.
Are you connecting from the outputs of the D12 to the inputs on the Panny? Make sure the recording input on the Panny is set to those inputs.
I'm not sure how technical you are so please forgive me if you know this but, you want rca's from the d12 to the input on the vcr/dvd, then you want rca's from the vcr/dvd output to the tv rca input. you may have to turn the vcr/dvd to vcr mode and use the "line input channel" to pass the picture through.
many channels now have macrovision signals that disable standalone digital recorders thru the rca outputs. i have R22's with this issue. even if i use an rf modulator the macrovision signal passes thru to the rf channel and my standalone dvd-r's recording process is stymied. of course there are devices to deal with this issue, if you want to archive.
I believe this is only because the r22 is an mpeg4 receiver. A d12 should not have this issue.
While composite rcas will give slightly better quality, you could always just use straight coax. Rg6 jumpers. Jumper from wall into sat input of d12. Jumper from 'to tv' on d12 to 'ant in' on vcr. Jumper from 'to tv' on vcr to the tv. Set every physical switch on the back of all devices to ch3, then turn the d12 on, turn the vcr on, tune it to ch3, then turn the tv on, tune it to ch3. Your now watching dtv. Hit record on the vcr when you want to record. Hit stop when your done. Use the vcr remote for this. It will only record what you are watching. Imho if you are willing to go through the effort of using the dtv autotune features in combination with vcr timers, your just better off paying for a dvr through directv, it so much less complicated.
