Recording a show after you start watching it FAILS

Starting watching the VP Debate, Preshow. And decided to record it after where I started, and then to record the debate. BUT
FAIL
I can't record the debate because the time got too close to the start time, so it just goes to watch live.
BUT if I record what I'm watching - PRESHOW, then I can only extend the record time for 90 min, not the 2 hours required to record the entire debate - whatever, could hav e been a movie.
SO FAIL can't record something if you start watching the show before the show you later decide to record.

So try to record the same show on another channel. BUT you can only switch to it you can't start a recording from the guide if it's already started. You have to switch to it
SO FAIL AGAIN.

we need some serious work here. Too many restrictions and lack of choices when you start watching and then decide to record something.

Thats not true. Tune to the program, select info, select record this program.
