Receivers in endless loop

Right around noon today both of my receivers (VIP211K) rebooted on their own and went into an endless loop. The Acquiring Signal screen comes up and very, very slowly I get 3 green bars then suddenly the last 2 bars go green and the Downloading Program Guide screen comes up. I never get any green bars on that screen and after a couple of minutes the unit completely powers itself off for about a half a minute and then the process starts all over again. I've unplugged both units twice but nothing has changed. They've both been looping for about 2 hours now. Technical Help is sending me 2 new receivers but I'm finding it difficult to believe both receivers would develop this exact same issue at exactly the same time.

A few days ago Dish pushed down an upgrade and the receivers acted similarly but eventually came back to normal. Now they're both looping. No power failure, no electrical storm or bad weather.

I should also mention I did hard resets on both too. The only way I can stop the loop is to hit the power button as soon as the Downloading Guide screen comes up, then the normal Standby screen shows but if I power either unit back on the loop starts all over again.

Hello. I am a retail installer in southwest Georgia, and I am seeing the exact same issue you are describing, Jeepguy! On a service call for a customer with this issue, I replaced the receiver. After activation, the new receiver downloaded the guide and worked normally until it was powered off. At that point it began the same loop of acquiring signal, locking up on the program guide, shutting down, and restarting. I performed multiple hard resets, replaced the LNB and all cabling, and the problem continued. Since there was nothing else to replace (as everything was now new), I apologized and promised to revisit tomorrow. Tech Support and Retail Services both say that there is no known issue, but we have at least four customers so far that have called today describing the same problem. All have either a 211 or 211k receiver, and at least two (possibly all) are on Eastern Arc. If anyone knows what is going on or how to fix it, PLEASE let us know. This can't be a coincidence, and the calls are bound to continue intil this problem is resolved. Thanks.

My advice refer the customer to dish and let them roll on those calls

My guess is the switch, in the changing tempatures. Just a guess though, so your LNB may need replaced.

Hmmm. Although replaced cable, what is the age and quality of the cable? How was it stored(these are both likely not going to be it, but never hurts to ask). What about the system ground? House ground? Even though no bad weather in the immediate area, is there anything on a weather map in view of the satellite? Rare but possible that will do it.

He's in PA, I'm in NC, there are several in GA, and a few posts on Facebook. It's on Dish's end. Either a bad update or something.

Everything is brand new. One customer with this issue has two 722k's that are working fine, with only the 211k, having problems. I originally suspected a possible electrical problem since everything else had been ruled out, but then we got several other calls today describing the exact same problem (all with 211 or 211k receivers). Figuring it was a widespread but unacknowledged problem, I took to the internet to see if anyone mentioned anything similar. I found Jeepguy's post describing the exact same issue with the same receivers on the same day. This can't be just a coincidence. I like Claude's suggestion, but Dish would probably send me the work orders anyway. Besides, I also have new installs scheduled using 211's. I should also mention that we have a 211k in our showroom that's running on a Tailgater (Western Arc) with no problems. That makes me wonder if the problem is limited to Eastern Arc setups. When I have time, I'll connect our 211k to an EA Dish to test this hypothesis.

My gnawing suspicion is that it's related to the software "upgrade" that has been pushed down over the past few days. It did this same thing right after the "upgrade" downloaded but then finally straightened itself out. No such luck today, however.

I agree. A couple of the customers said they had problems a couple days ago that seemed to straighten out until today. One had scheduled a service call, then cancelled it after the problem subsided. He called back this afternoon when his TV became completely unwatchable. Do you know whether you're on Eastern or Western Arc, Jeepguy?

Judging by that looks like it got bumped up in their system

Blaming the problem on severe weather when there is no severe weather sounds more like a cop out to me. The skies have been clear, and the only thing severe about the weather down here is the heat. Even during a downpour, I wouldn't expect this to happen. Besides, wouldn't "severe weather" affect other receiver models as well?

It was still looping (about 10 hours) when I went to bed at 10pm last night but this morning at 6am it was up and running. I hope this isn't chronic.

Think Hopper HD bit the dust (Dirt team time?)
