receiver screen freeze

actually using rca cables right now as was suggested I do. Your right it is only 720. I always thought it was 1080. But this problem exists on hdmi and rca for sure. But It does get better the lower I set the progressive scan. I don't have any problems with any of my other devices" roku, dvd player, vcr, or the kids nintendo wii. it was also suggested I try a different tv. I have a small 13'' i can play with. I found a firmware for the tv
here
http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/TC-50PX14?t=downloads&support

but I am not sure if its an update or what is already on it.
I don't suppose anyone could lead me to the best working firmware "north american" download for openbox s9 hd? Maybe worth a shot. If it is a codec issue between ali based receivers and the tv maybe a firmware would fix it?

That TV firmware is for freezing on ant and cable input, so that may help you. If you do it, check if the SD slot is clogged up with dust first and try to blow the dust out, if it is. Those Panasonic's with the SD slot seem to clog up with dust a lot and you don't want it crapping out in the middle of a firmware update and bricking the TV.

Actually just went and read through previous firmwares for that TV and there was one for HDMI issues. It's included with the latest firmware, so just do the latest one. If your TV has never had it's firmware updated, then that probably is your problem.

Something else you could try is setting the audio in the TV to it's most basic setting, it could be the audio causing the HDMI to lock up.

Update didn't change anything.Froze again. I decided to hook the receiver to a 13 inch tv and watch for a while. It froze. :(
But for the first time I see that it froze when signal took a dive and then came back up. That makes me think.
In fact that is comparable what some of those ota boxes do when signal is lost. The screen freezes. Which makes me think that if I am intermittently loosing signal on certain transponders that the sat receiver's "Being digital" opposed to analog I am getting a frozen screen. It takes more signal to run at higher resolution and I am having less trouble at lower resolution. So... I am thinking signal problem. Anyone else?

Was that update the TV or receiver, or both?

Think you're onto something.

But the picture remained 'frozen'? If I walk in front of a dish the picture will freeze but will 'continue' shortly after 'getting out of the way'.
Just got to figure out what's causing the signal to dive. Guess I'd double check the dish alignment then I'd be checking the coax and connectors. Make sure there's no cracks in the insulation and all connectors are 'clean'.

The update was for the tv. wires are good. connections good. I know the alignment on the fixed dish is perfect if not close. The other dish, hmmm not gonna bother. Its freezing on both now. I will just use the fixed dish for trouble shooting.

Will trouble shoot and try to make it freeze tomorrow. I will intermittently place my hand in front of lnbf see what happens.
I would like to change firmwares for the receivers if anyone can point me to firmware that is for North America. Also how to do this without loosing my sats and channels I have scanned in would be a big help. That would really suck.

Thought you would have it with the TV firmware update, tough one, this is. In the FTA forum there's a sub section called FTA firmware that has firmwares for all three of your receivers. I don't have any of the receivers that you have so I don't know how to update them or how to save your sat info first but I'm sure someone on here does and will post.

Yeah I will be doing firmwares now. First part of trouble shooting today done. I had my kid go up the hill and put there hand intermittently in front of lnbf. I got the no signal notice but no freeze ups. Also I noticed that I had left it on all night. 13 inch tv off. I had not turned the tv on until ready to trouble shoot. After she came down the hill and came inside, then it froze. So no freeze ups with tv off but with it on it froze.

Boy, this continues to sound like a resolution or output setting. All the questions have been asked, but ???? Hmmm

Most ALI STBs have both a resolution and an aspect setting. If you have set the resolution to 720p, do the menus have aspect ratio settings. This is usually set default to auto. Change to 4:3, 16:9, etc.???

My open box s9 hd and s10 has aspect ratio settings yes. I am not sure if the or manhattan does. Since you asked I changed it to 16:9 on the s10 that I just installed today in my daughters room. The channel smile of a child on galaxy 19 was constantly freezing up on that receiver just like the openbox s9 does in general. It actually has not froze up since. The downfall is that she is watching on a 12 or 13'' tv and now there is black bars on the side. We shall see if it continues without freezing up.

Its a shame really. I was hoping to actually fix this problem. I wish I had a few other receivers to play with to see if this problem is just specific to these types of boxes. Still working on doing the firmwares.

Change the setting to 4:3 to match the aspect ratio of your daughter's TV.

Your TVs are likely reacting to the automatic resolution or aspect changes that were selected in your STBs. By switching off these automatic features, the TV's are no longer subjected to a change in the program stream that they obviously cannot process.

Wait, what are STBs? And I had changed the aspect ratio as was suggested with the possibility that it would help on my daughter's TV. It did help if not solve problem on hers, but the bars are black on sides. The other two settings make it freeze. Mind you that her tv is a more than 10 year old 12 to 13". I think 4:3 will make it freeze up again as that was default. But yes aspect ratio and resolution definitely impact the freeze ups. If these receivers were pc hardware base I would almost have to start thinking like I was diagnosing a computer problem. Which in this case would make me think driver or video memory problem. Does anyone have the hardware specs on openbox s9 or s10 or the mannhattan rs-1933?

Ok. sorry its been a while. I am convinced this is a firmware problem. I upgraded the firmware on my Manhattan rs-1933 receiver version 4.4. http://www.manhattan-digital.net/support.htm
It does not freeze on highest resolution like it did before. So one down 2 receivers to go. But I want to fix the time zone issue. I have no option to set the time for North America as its not listed as an option. Of all the firmware I cannot find American. I can find American transponders but I have backed up my own. Can anyone help. I am open to running non Manhattan firmware if necessary.

Solved. It was in fact a firmware problem. No more freeze ups. All 3 receivers were basically the same ali chip set. All but the s10 upgraded and s9 and rs-1933 no longer freeze. Thank you everyone. This took so long. Hopefully this thread will help someone else in the future.:)
