[VOOM] reception

I live in Portland, OR. Have seen the Seattle posts. Called a local
installer (I saw the current VOOM offer and thought maybe it's time)
who told me that the reception is so bad here that he's not doing
any more installs until VOOM figures out a fix. E-mailed VOOM and
got a totally nondescript response ("We'll find an installer for
you"). Well, that doesn't answer the question. Maybe Gill in Seattle
is on a hill with a clear shot at the satellite, but I'm not. Once
some rain arrived here, according to this installer, the reception
went belly up. So I guess I'll put off signing on yet again.

While it's true that there is a low elevation angle to the satellite in the
Northwest part of the country-about 11 degrees above the horizon-- meaning
that it's easy to get blocked when trying to find a spot that can "see" the
bird, once the signal is acquired the performance is the same, for all
intents and purposes, as anywhere else. The power is the same, the signal is
the same, just harder to see, potentially.

That's the facts, regardless of what the installer is telling you.

I've escalated this into Voom, I would expect you'll be contacted, and
we'll all go from there.

I'm near Eugene, Oregon and, although we've only had Voom since May, we've had some heavy rain recently and our reception has been fine through it. We also get all the locals even though we're about 25 miles out from town.

We are in a valley and its a bit of a way to the hills - I know its a bit more hilly in Portland so don't know if that would affect things there.

Probably meaning that other than yourself no one else ever gets back to you from VOOM. I'm still waiting for responses on the OTA tuner question and reseller possibilities. I've heard absolutely nothing back from the VOOM folks since you said that you would pass on my questions and input to the appropriate people and see to it that it was followed up on. Sorry, but that's the state of the situation and that's probably what he means.

is threads filled with stories about technical and CSR problems, and
a struggling customer base. Good idea for VOOM to try to be the
first out of the gate; but a loyal group of true believers can only
do so much. The market will force VOOM to get its act together.

So do you want me to have people follow you with you, or not?:)
It's your call, I don't want to put you through any unnecessary
trouble. I read your earlier note as wanting facts and maybe help as
opposed to "reporting".
Either way, whatever works for you but near as I can tell, no one's
ever surveyed and checked your actual location. But as I said, it's your
call in the end. I've already gotten people involved to see if we can't
both get someone credible to check out your location and avoid the
installer you spoke with that, seemingly, isn't interested.
Either way, just let me know.

Please don't misunderstand me. It is very helpful to have a contact such as yourself. I believe you really care and if there is an answer within your domain to get out to us you do it immediately. The problem is once it leaves your hands, getting other folks to respond. It appears to be more of a corporate culture issue than anything or else a staffing issue. I've been in the same frustrating position you are with this one at companies I have worked for. Basically, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.....sometimes you can, so please keep trying. It would really make sense to develop a proceedure to OTA only authorize the 2nd hand units and then when additional revenue is needed VOOM could contact their OTA only list and offer authorization at a monthly price, etc.
It's really is as if they don't want you to try. Why a company with financial issues would reject potential new customers I don't get. With really a minimum of changes in policy the VOOM thumbs up sign would be everywhere. It is a great service after all with the best little dish PQ in the marketplace. Thanks to your department!

Please don't misunderstand me. It is very helpful to have a contact
such as yourself. I believe you really care and if there is an answer
within your domain to get out to us you do it immediately. The problem
is once it leaves your hands, getting other folks to respond. It
appears to be more of a corporate culture issue than anything or else a
staffing issue. I've been in the same frustrating position you are with
this one at companies I have worked for. Basically, you can lead a
horse to water but you can't make him drink.....sometimes you can, so
please keep trying. It would really make sense to develop a proceedure
to OTA only authorize the 2nd hand units and then when additional
revenue is needed VOOM could contact their OTA only list and offer
authorization at a monthly price, etc.
It's really is as if they don't want you to try. Why a company with
financial issues would reject potential new customers I don't get. With
really a minimum of changes in policy the VOOM thumbs up sign would be
everywhere. It is a great service after all with the best little dish
PQ in the marketplace. Thanks to your department!

Probably meaning that other than yourself no one else ever gets back

you from VOOM. I'm still waiting for responses on the OTA tuner
question and reseller possibilities. I've heard absolutely nothing

from the VOOM folks since you said that you would pass on my questions
and input to the appropriate people and see to it that it was followed
up on. Sorry, but that's the state of the situation and that's

I'm also in Portland, Oregon and I've been subscribed to VOOM since march. I'm conviced that this area has some of the worst installer in the whole country. When I 1st ordered VOOM, the 1st installation attempt (on 3/10) failed. The 1st installer (from Adams Communications) reported no lign-of-sight due to some trees about 500 feet away that covered ~15 degrees up . However, I wasn't ready to give up. It called up my attention that he've mentioned that his success rate had been only 5 out of the last 25 installation attempts. Based on that argument, I called VOOM and requested a 2nd opinion. The 2nd installer subcontracted by Adams (named Steve) came one week later and did a successfull installation. Today my signal strenght is typically 87-94 and no major issues.
