I was at Wal-Mart and saw an RCA DTA recorder. You insert a thumb drive in the side and it records shows from OTA. It even has timers you can set up. It costs $49.99 and also has an hdmi output. Anybody else seen these?!

I know there are a couple other options like it that are less in price (Homeworx as example)

Not trying to hijack here. Can a tivo record from a variety of sources, also can ext ehd be added for additional storage.

You can add an external drive but it has to be esata. Most folks just upgrade the hard drive in the unit (which take it from a computer illiterate.....its rather easy to do)

Tivo can record from OTA (Roamio basic or OTA) or digital cable (all Roamios and Bolt). I know you can stream stuff from it too and if I remember right it can download episodes to your Tivo. I don't stream (not enough bandwidth a month to do that) so hopefully someone else can comment.

edit: looks like the streaming portion doesnt download it to the Tivo. It just lists it in the lists for easy access

To get back to the topic I guess it depends on what the OP wants to do. If you are a casual recording person (a couple things now and then) the single tuner units like the one he posted, the Homeworx (or clones) will work fine. But there are limitations. Do a search here for "Homeworx" and you'll see

If you are going to record alot, I suggest a Tivo. Series 3 units with lifetime are pretty inexpensive right now (folks dumping them for the newer ones). The Series 3 is a two tuner unit and it works great (I use one)

Anyone thinking about buying a used TiVo should be aware that TiVo just announced that they will no longer re-activate any Series 1, 2 or 3 units. So if you buy one of those TiVos, make absolutely sure that the unit has lifetime service attached to it, in which case it can be transferred to your account and will still be active. For any Series 1, 2 or 3 TiVo that was only on month-to-month or year-to-year service (NOT lifetime service), you will not be able to re-activate them, so please don't waste money buying one used! (And for anyone still interested in a new TiVo Roamio OTA with lifetime service -- which I have -- you can still snag the special $300 deal at Amazon. TiVo is no longer offering that deal directly through their own website.)

That kinda sucks about the Series 3. But for Series 1 & 2 I agree. They are for cable only (analog cable). I've got a series 2 laying here (no svc) and its pretty much useless

Series 3 has OTA tuners and will decode analog stations (which in some areas...like mine....still exist) ;)
