Has anyone here fought the "random restart" problem with their DVR and won? If so I'd sure appreciate some pointers, because the problem is getting worse and may make me drop DirecTV completely if I can't get it under control.

Major Symptom: 3 to 5 times a day the screen goes dark in the middle of a program, the DVR's power lite goes off, then lights up, the "Welcome" screen comes on and six minutes or so later everything is back to normal. If watching a recorded show it "resumes", but only at the beginning. All recording ceased but restarts about 30 seconds after things are normal.

Optional symptom: Program freezes on screen, recording lite goes off [if it had been on] and remote control operation will not effect the DVR. Thus it must be manually "reset" and the process listed in "major symptom" begins at the point where the power lite returns.

I have three R10's and they each have experienced the problem, but in varying degrees. Occasionally two will "restart" at the same time. Never have all three done so simultaneously, as far as I know.

To "cure" the problem I've renewed the hard drive, installed a hard drive cooling frame with two mini-fans, renewed the case fan with a higher capacity unit, replaced the power supply with known good, protected the unit with a new APC UPS, removed all dust from the case and raised the four lower corners of the case 3/16" to give it increased airflow through the case's bottom grilles.

Any ideas on what I've missed? The problem began about 90 days ago and is slowing getting worse and worse and wo....

What's the capacity of the recorded programs? I've heard of the newer DVRs locking up and doing funny stuff when they were close to full because it doesn't have enough available memory to support its functions. Being that they are R-10s, I'd say it's a good place to start. The simutaneous reset of the two units could have something to do with software version and other assorted tasks it needs to perform internally on that particular software version that would cause them both to lock up and reboot.

The one with the new HDD has a 500GB capacity, up from 80GB. Since it's less than a month old I'm guessing the most it has on it is about 50GB right now. The other two have the original 80GBs and they regularly auto-delete older programs to make room for new, so that could be the issue with them - however, the new "Deleted Programs" group feature seems to be working and keeps dropping previously deleted shows, even during the day. But you may have something there. How does one opt out of maintaining the "Deleted Programs" group? Any idea where I could obtain the latest firmware updates? And how to install them? Maybe the USB port from a thumb drive?
