Radio Frequency Interference caused by DVR Model 625.

I recently received from Dish Network a DVR Model 625. Once I started using it I experienced terrible broad spectrum radio frequency interference on both of my portable battery powered radios on all the shortwave bands and the AM band. When I unplug the receiver the interference disappears. I have to walk outside to about 50 feet before the interference begins to disappear. I never had this problem with my DVR Model 522 and my non-DVR 300 series. Has anyone else had this problem? DISH says nobody else has had this complaint, they are sending me another Model 625 but I bet I have the sample problem with it.

The only difference between a 522 and 625 is the hard drive. So, either your unit is bad, or the bigger hard drives emit more EMI.

Just checked our 625 and it doesn't seem to be giving interference.

We have an Onkyo Receiver and a CD Player Stereo that won't receive anything but the AM Loop antennas are not hooked up (we don't use AM usually and I don't know where they are, so I can't plug them in to test it). We have another Aiwa Stereo that has the Antenna hooked up and is in fact sitting right on top of the 625 and it was able to pick up a station in the 500 to 600 KHz Range and there was no interference when the receiver was plugged in or not.

Hope that helps,
Geoff

RFI - Ungrounded extension cord

I had sever RFI from about 5.5 MHz to 10 MHz including S9 across the 40 meter ham band. We traced it to my neighbor's Dish TV model 522 DVR box across the street. The interference was greatly reduced when an ungrounded extension cord was removed. After that the interference switched between S2 and S5 when their bedroom light was switched on/off!

My Yaesu VX5 handheld receiver in AM mode was handy when tracing the hot spots. Hot spots were: at the dish coax entrance; around the outside air conditioner; at the outside gas pipes; and to a lesser extent at the electrical service entrance (with groundrod).

We conclude that the RFI is following the DVR ground paths. Our next steps are to add or re-route grounding from the DVR. I also want to try adding a ferrite onto the DVR line cord close to the DVR box.

722 receiver & remote, a few questions
