Questions about the new XiP Receivers?

I think that they should of been able to make the existing Vip series of dvrs work with hd to a 110 box via coax and give us either tv 1 or tv 2 in HD in two rooms. It shouldn't of been that much of a reach to achieve that. Instead a whole new series of receivers has to be invented .....AGAIN.

I think that part of Dish's problem the last few years was the TiVo lawsuit. They made changes in the VIP line (622/722) to try to work around the patent. Then it started to look like their workaround may have problems based on the TiVo trial so they did another entire workaround for the 922. Essentially they had too many of their resources tied up doing the TiVo workarounds and delaying their boxes and features. The XIP line was invented before they had the lawsuit settled, it probably had another workaround being developed for it.

The cant do that as the ViP boxes do not have the necessary MoCA chipset.

Again folks this thread is for questions on the XiP series, if you have other questions or comments please do it in a different thread. :)

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes, that's the entire point of the entire project. :)

Wooo-hooo! Thank you Scott. It appears I was wise to wait on the 922 as the XiP 813 seems to do EVERYTHING I want, including a sling (the extender to work with all HD DVR's) to the Sling Receiver that I think I will still need.

I would add that I think Charlie should just spend whatever it takes to get this box ready for prime-time by the EARLY fall quarter (I know they really want it to available before Christmas), even if the cost of hiring more engineers and software people make it a cost of $1-5 million. Dish MUST get this out there ready and working well ASAP or it will hurt them worse. Another one-year late release is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

As for the 922 seeming to be left behind, I think that is more about the technology changing and becoming more affordable causing last week's latest and greatest to be obsolete this week. Not entirely Dish's fault that more powerful chips come down on price and more robust technologies to support true Whole Home DVR with ALL functionality make it cheap enough NOW to manufacture and give away or sell at a discount or full retail. Dish is back to being the technology leader it once was. Please don't screw this up, Charles.

Thanks for the response, Scott.

I, too, would like to know, as an earlier poster asked, if we will be able to use a single USB "dual tuner" for access to 2 OTA channels or if the 813 will only support single ATSC (OTA) tuners, and if we have to/can use TWO separate USB single tuners to achieve 2 OTA's available for viewing/recording on the network? I saw only 3 USB ports on the 813. That means that if we are limited to only SINGLE USB ATSC OTA, the last USB port, in my case is going to be used by the Extender or external HDD, and I couldn't be able to use both at the same time.

Thanks in advance.

So, not sure if this is the right place (not that it's an issue at this time) - I just got my 922 a couple months ago. So now they are saying that a new box is coming out in a few months again? I wonder what the odds of getting a new box instead of the 922 are since I just plunked down $200 for it. This would allow me to get rid of my 211, and actually have HD in the basement as well. Glad to hear this is coming, but I'm going to be upset if my 922 gets demoted to a bedroom box that I really won't even need.

Grrr... figures.

You can only upgrade once a year and they are not going to switch you out for free.

I think the 922 is now a dead end box when the 813 comes to market. Every thing the 922 does , you can do with the 722/722k and a sling adapter ,and the pq looks better with the adapter, than the 922 . The 922 still does NOT have internal manual timers or dish pass, only online. Now you can have a single 813 dvr with 3 sat tuners and up to three 110 boxes that can each add an ota usb tuner to and dvr on every HD tv in your house -up to 4 hd tvs . PLUS you can still sling from it with a sling adapter to your computer, ipad etc. The 922 will be nothing more than a souped up 722k with pretty graphics and channel logos , that the 813 will now have as well. The 922 will be an extinct box once the new whole house dvr comes to market.

But the question is when is that going to happen. I'll be shocked if it is available to the public before next year's Team Summit...

I am thinking the same thing. If it had a good chance of coming out this year they would have first shown it at CES. Something tells me that it is already 5 months late.

The XiP series sounds great, but my problem with them is that I can't watch any of my home sports teams on it being in the nation's #1 DMA (NYC), we now don't get any RSN's and even when we had them they were only part time HD. I switched to DirecTV last week. There boxes are capable, but having the best boxes in the world isn't worth their weight in gold, if you can't tune into what you want to watch.

I really dont expect them to switch out any current customers for the XiP series, at the beginning it will be for new customers only unless you want to hook them up yourself.

These will be easy to install for new installs, but could be a pain replacing an existing setup depending on how the wiring was done.

Thanks for reminding us about that Scott, I am fairly confident I will switch to Direct now. Since Dish has proven they don’t know how to release any new product on time, we know it is more likely going to be late 2012 before Dish WHDVR is available to NEW customers. It’s a real shame that as a 10+ year customer that I will have to wait even longer to get the new receivers. Honestly, I could switch to Direct now, try out their whole home DVR solution, if I don’t like it I could then switch back in 2 years as a new customer and be one of the first to get the Dish WHDVR.

The XIP technology, assuming they can deliver on the software, seems like it will be fun to experiment with but how many people just want to watch some TV at the lowest possible cost.

In my opinion the success of this receiver will depend on the monthly cost charged to subscribers. Currently the 211 receivers are tough to beat for price. I have two 211's which I pay only $7.00 for the second receiver. I paid the one time $40 fee to activate both as DVRs. The 1 TB EHDs cost me $75 each. At the time of the install I could have had a third 211 installed.

I use the tuners in the TVs for OTA -CATV signals. This gives me the equivalent of two tuners for each viewing location. In addition I picked up a Slingbox Solo to stream video. I primarily stream the video to my computer.

In summary my monthly cost for equipment is $7 for two DVR enabled receivers.

Based on my observation of the four neighbors which I signed up Dish, my neighbors seldom use the 722s DVR capabilities other than to pause live TV or on occasion time shift programming to a more convenient viewing hour. None of them are accumulating large video libraries. Given the choice most of my neighbors would rather save the $6 and give up the DVR.

Again while some subset of Dish's subscriber base will pay for the latest and greatest technology many more will be interested in price, programming, sports, more HDTV, etc.

Jim

It is funny that you would pick the Whole Home DVR as your tipping point. DIRECTV promised to have a Whole Home DVR available by Fall 2005 and I think it likely that its first viable implementation won't be available until 2012 (HR34), fully seven years after such a device was announced.

I think most were at least surprised that DIRECTV simply renamed MRV as "Whole Home DVR" as it really isn't a Whole Home DVR if it involves one DVR for each stream.

Well if DISH history is any indication of predictability, then we are looking at next summer of 2012 , give or take the world ending sometime next year, which ever comes first.;)

My question is where do you get the USB ota tuner modules from ? Is DISH going to market the only kind that will be able to be used with this setup?

I finally made it back to work! I had a great time in Denver and the trip home was fast. Hope everyone was happy with the news from Team Summit. I know I'm pretty excited for where the company heading.

Reading through the posts on here I see there are still plenty of complainers and nay-sayers. I'm not sure I see the problem, Dish is giving everyone what they've been wanting. So you have to wait a little while, BIG DEAL. I would think you've all been use to this by now. I too just got a 922 in February and paid $200 for it, you don't hear me complaining that a new product will be out. I'm still excited for the new receiver. I plan on testing it out first before I decide to put in my home.

Lets be happy everyone! Dish is making some aggressive moves in the right direction.

I am sure Dish will have a branded or supported module. I doubt they will be able to support any old USB OTA tuner. Dish has been reasonable on the price of the tuner modules in the 722/922, I bet they come in with a resonable price on these too.
