Question re: EHD max. capacity

I couldn't find an answer to this in a quick search of the other EHD threads. I have a 211 and 622. I read elsewhere (Smith, P. I think) that the max. capacity for the 211 is 750GB. Today a Dish tech support person told me that is also the max. capacity for the 622. Can anyone here confirm these figures by experience? Have you tried to connect a 1TB drive to a 622 or 722 and did it work?

Staples has My Book 1TB drives on sale for $100 right now through tomorrow. I did buy a 750GB drive there ($80) for my 211 but they had to order it from another store. There are 1TB drives in stock and at that price I'm thinking of grabbing one for the 622 as well, but it won't help me much if it's incompatible.

TIA for any comments on that...
 
750 is the max "supported" capacity, some have reported that bigger drives work ok. The main factor seems to be whether it is a single drive (good) in the enclosure or some sort of "raid" array (bad).

Will Staples let you return it, if you change your mind?
 
My understanding is that it needs to be two platterred. Capacity does not matter as I have 1TB WD connected to it.

Recent Tech Chat indicated as long as the drive was a single platter, capacity didn't matter. If the 1T at Staples is compatible, it must be a single platter drive. A good deal too.
 
That's good to hear! Staples did have the 1TB drives in stock and I think the in-store price for that one was also $10 cheaper than in the flyer, or $90 + tax. I might just take a chance on that one as well and get started sooner...! (I need to confirm it's a single drive, but I believe it is.)

I will confirm 1.5TB works w/ my 622.

Anyone hooked a 2TB up, yet?

Too bad it doesn't work w/ RAID arrays. Imagine 8TB's on the EHD! :D
 
OK - I just picked up a single drive 1TB unit at Staples, $100 plus tax. I'll get it activated on my 211 over the weekend and let ya'll know on Mon. how it works...

UPDATE - 1/2 Luck with the 1TB drive

Well, I connected the 1TB drive to the 211. The receiver recognized something was connected to the USB port within a couple of seconds, then reported that the drive was the wrong size, needs to be between 50GB and 750GB. I clicked OK, and that was it. (Rinse and repeat, same result.) When I connected it to my 622, again the receiver recognized something connected, then the screen went to "what do I want to do" and gave 4 options. When I chose one akin to "set-up" it told me I needed to activate it with Dish first. I decided not to do that quite yet. So it seems like there is hope the 1TB drive will work with the DVRs.

The 750GB drive I ordered will be here in a day or so, at which time I will activate it on the 211. The 1TB drive should be good to go on the 622 at that point as well. I'll update the thread once I have activated.

So at this point it seems like the HD capacity limit for the 211 is indeed 750GB, and something higher for the 622/722s...
 
The number of platters makes no difference as long as it a single hard drive and not 2 drives in the same enclosure. I don't know about the capacity limit on a 211 but my 1 TB Fantom works great on my 622.

Yes. A 1TB drive will typically have three or four platters (6-8 heads).

It might make sense to say you cannot have two spindles, as two spindles means two drives, but to claim the disk cannot have more than one platter to be compatible is stupid.

It's not stupid. It's just a misunderstanding of certain technical terms. Plenty of people even executives of tech companies worth more than everything posting and reading this thread combined make those kind of mistakes.

Yeah the 622/722 have a practical limit of 2TB right now until larger EHD's make it to market. The 211's have a very troublesome limit of 750GB as the sweet spot has shifted to 1.5TB. 500GB/750GB drives will become more and more rare.

You're right. Not knowing the difference between "platter" and "spindle" is ignorance, not stupidity. There's nothing wrong with being ignorant, after all it's impossible to be an expert on everything.

Stupidity is not knowing the difference between "platter" and "spindle" and then posting misinformation, under the mistaken belief that you are helping others when you clearly have no clue yourself.
 
Two other questions have not seen much discussion:
(1) spindle speed: most are now 7200 but I think you can use lower power 5400 rpm,
(2) cache size: most are 16MB but I think 8MB works as in some cheaper drives.
Note that many RAID disks use 8MB for each cache.
I would probably stick with 7200 rpm and 16MB.
