Question of the Day

Judged events such as gymnastics, diving, syncronized swimming, figure skating, X-Games, freestyle skiing as such are simply not sports.

There is nothing you can say about them (they require physical strength, practice and are capable of being judged by others) that you cannot say about bricklaying.

Its just not a sport.

WHY? because there is no ball involved? Since it is not a sport, can YOU do any of the above mentioned without not only being athletically fit...but athletically talented?

Again. Say something about gymnastics that differenciates it from bricklaying.

Any physical human endeavor that require physical strength and an artistic flair that is capable of being judged. That does not make these sports.

Judged events are not sports.

I'm not a big fan of judged events, but at least gymnasts are doing something physical with all the jumps and flips. That's a lot better than auto racing where the drivers are just glorified cab drivers IMO, and they call THAT a sport!

You'll never understand what it takes to drive 190 mph for 3-5 hours will you ...

You have to be in GREAT shape to do this type of thing.

Oh, I forgot to mention that most of the time it's OVER 130* inside the cars as well.

How long till you would PASS OUT !!!

Jimbo, outside of making a bunch of left hand turns and keeping your foot on the gas pedal, what kind of physical fitness is required to drive a car?

You try to drive one of those cars for hours at a time and then tell me they are not athletes.

Tony Stewart is nothing near an athlete.

A sport requires a ball or puck, with the exception of golf, that's not a sport, look at John Daily.

Now I'm not saying gymnast, swimmers or track and field people aren't in great shape. But everything they do is for individual goals. Sports are team oriented, with the exception of tennis, I just like looking at the girls.:D

John Daly hasn't won recently has he? Maybe his pysique has something to do with that.

Look at the #1 player that has dominated the PGA the last 10 years. Hint: his tame is Tiger Woods and he just so happens to be the most physically fit golfer out there. Coincidence? I think not.

Not saying I personally wouldn't get dizzy or could even stomach speeding around in circles all day, but the argument was whether or not a NASCAR driver has to be in "great physical shape" to compete. There simply is no argument that this "sport" requires a healthy physique to compete.

But even when he was one of the top golfers, he wasn't in great shape, alcohol abuse just made it worse.

Once again it's a game that goes after individual goals, nothing wrong if you like the game, it's just not a sport.

BTW...other players who won wasn't in as great shape as Tiger.

You can't have it both ways. Sports is either a team thing or not. You can't pick and choose which ones are and aren't based on whether they look good or not.

Please don't belittle the gymnasts, divers, and other similar sports. These people are more athletic than anybody in the four major sports. They train as hard, if not harder, as any sport. The real question is how to improve the scoring. Are these sports? Hell yes. No room for improvisation, and yes, maybe they are "glorified recitals", but I would still call them sports.
By the way, I play guitar and piano, never felt like endurance was part of the equation.

I used to play the drums in a thrash/speed metal band. It required endurance. Does that mean playing a drum solo would be considered a sport.

I think that gymnasts are athletes but I think what they are doing is more of a performance than a sport.

Whatever. Pilots and astronauts endure more stress on their bodies than drivers do, but you don't hear people calling them athletes. And I've had long car rides myself, sometimes where it was hot and stuffy in the car, and I NEVER considered that to be an athletic event. Face it the only difference between Tony Stewart and a guy delivering pizzas is a little more horsepower.

Pizza drivers turn right more often.
