One thing I loved about the guide on my DISH receiver was all the HD channels (besides sports/movie packages) were not only grouped with their respective SD channel, but also grouped together. It started at channel 9418 and from there and up it was all/only HD channels.

Since I only like to watch HD content, I've found it frustrating with D*'s guide to browse the HD channels. I think you can create a favorites list with just these channels and that would be a solution. But the problem is the other people in the house watch SD and HD so they would be pissed if I forgot to change the guide back. I like to make using the TV/Home Theater as easy as possible on them.

So am I missing something or am I out of luck?

EDIT: And for you Harmony remote owners, would it be possible to set it up as part of the power on sequence to change the guide settings?

ive got my goude set so that if there are duplicate hd/sd channels only the hd show

you could set fav1 to just hd, and have the other channels in fav2

can fav's be shared amoung receivers?

Back when there were only a couple dozen of HD channels I created an HD only favorites list. Now there are so many, it's not really worth it. (To me) Check the box in the guide setup to hide SD duplicates. It will clean the guide up a lot.

As far as the Harmony goes, You could create the macro, but it would be a lot steps to switch over to another favorites list, then back again before power off.

I think what I would have it do is have an activity that is strictly for me. "Watch TV HD". This would turn everything on and then change the guide to "FAV1". Nothing would happen at power off.

When the mom/kids turn on the TV using "Watch TV", I would have that turn everything on and change the guide to "normal" or whatever the default value is.

EDIT: I've already set it up so there are no duplicates. I just miss having all HD channels grouped together.

Create your HD only favorite list. When you go to the guide, you can use one of the color buttons (it says "guide options" on screen) to switch to a different filter. choose your HD Only favorites. It's a temporary change in the guide. It goes back after you leave the guide I think. I'm new as well, but have been messing with different guide settings.
My remote has pages of favorites that use the channel logos instead of just typed description. So it's making the transition easier. ALSO, while you're watching TV, hit the up arrow. It brings up QuickTune. You can populate that with whatever channels you want. I think it holds 9 channels so like a favorite of favorites. :)

When I change to my custom favorite setup, hit exit, and hit guide again the setting is still for my custom favorite.

One thing I did find was while in the guide, hit the guide button again and a list will come up that says "Filter the Guide". Go to the last option (use page down) for "HDTV Channels". Now the guide shows only HD channels I get. This seems to be a great option other than it shows all the 100s (CINEHD). When you exit out of the guide, the filter is removed.

So I could go that route and just skip to channel 200 to start my HD browsing.

The custom list stays selected until you change it. That's so you can set up the guide the way you want it and then never have to mess with it again. I set mine up with Custom1, added "what I get", then unchecked all the PPV, infomercial/home shopping, spanish, uninteresting sports, porn, religious and all the other stuff I will never ever watch. Basically my guide is only 253 channels out of 700+ that it started with. Much easier to manage that way. But then if I want to get a PPV, all I have to do is switch back to the regular list.
