Question about Hopper's front USB port

Can the USB port on the front of the Hopper DVR receiver be used to play back various video file formats (.MKV, .AVI, .MP4, etc.) from a USB thumb drive? Or is it mainly for hard drive expansion?

It is for hard drive expansion and the Sling Adapter.
