Can you purchase the receivers you need for each TV on say-EBay, or do you have to committ to the leased units when setting up for the first time?

Yes, you can "buy" recievers on the Internet but if purchased from an authorized dealer they're probably leased units and you're pretty much right back where you started. Buying units from private individuals can be a problem as there are folks who "sell" leased units (units they don't really own) and you can get stuck. Strike a deal with D* for units and don't worry about them being leased or owned.....there's really no advantage to owning a reciever.

I was actually thinking of buying an HD receiver for the bedroom as I saw them on ebay for half of what D* wants to charge for them. Should I not buy one?

Be more specific are you seeing a new HR20 for $150? Read all the details of the auction carefully.

No, I already purchased a HR21 from directv as part of my sign-up deal. What I saw, that I'd like for the upstairs bedroom, is a H20 regular ole HD receiver for about 50-60 bucks including shipping. Directv wants $100 plus 20 dollars more for shipping.

Ebay is fine. I've bought numerous receivers over the years off ebay and have been 100% successful in activating each one. A couple key things to keep in mind when doing this:

1. Try to purchase from a dealer or other big seller. Legitimate DirecTV dealers do sell on ebay.

2. Ensure the unit is new-in-box, sealed, never activated.

3. Ensure it comes with its original access card. These are traditionally sealed in their own little plastic bags in the box.

You can get a new H20 from the Costo in SoCal for $84.99.
Same here in Cincy. Just (honest!) bought one this afternoon and ran another line from my 6X8 switch to it and activated it in about 1 hour. It's the H20-600 (made in China) and a little bit different than my H20-? That I got with my original install. R32 remote that will also control my Vizio 32". Easy, painless and no worries about ebay issues.

Buying from E bay is risky if its not a authrized dvt dealer. Dtv policy is not to activate receivers sold to you from another person and you'll have to buy a new access card, provide a respite and be transferred to a special team to get the OK to activate.

If the receiver is from a account that still owes Directv money you would have to pay off the balance before they let you move the unit to your account, all that said and Im sure some slip by but it can be a real issue.

I would only buy from authorized dealers, anyone else dose not have permission to sell the leased units and Dtv has no obligation to let you keep it. If the unit was owned you'll have less issues.

If I leased a car then tried to sell it to you on E-bay would you buy it?
