I would like to know the following.
I have a friend, whom need a new smartphone, his contract is not up. I have a plain simple phone (no data plan) which I like, and I'm eligible for a new phone.
I would like to purchase the smartphone, sign the two agreement, and give the phone to the friend.
If I purchase the phone, ATT want me to sign up for a data plan.

Can I just purchase the phone with out the data plan and give it to my friend?

You will have to purchase the phone and applicable data plan and then have the data plan removed. You are just on the hook for another 2 yrs of service. Just swap the sims and have the data removed from your acct.

Be aware if you are on a grandfathered voice or text plan, you will lose that and be put on current pricing voice plans.
